I read it in an article in "kit car" I think published about that time, that's about when I had the subscription. Now that I think about it they said there were 2 cars, a small block and a big block....I thought the small block car was blown up. McBurnie got the other one in trade for building the TR pantara replica. That's just what I think I remember...clearly it could be wrong.

Who knows, maybe it's some urban legend. I've got an issue of Popular Mechanics from July '87 which mentions all of what we've said on this thread...except blowing up the Daytona. Again, who knows? You wouldn't happen to have a copy of that kit car mag lying around.

Oh yes, and BTW...a friend of a friend selling his friend's actual Miami Vice ''show-car'' replica ....on E-Bay! Give me a break! Looks like trolls are not only limited to F-Chat.

Not a chance...I tend to read and discard. I remember the article was about McBurnie, his work and I believe mainly the trouble he was having with ferrari. He was selling a lot of Daytona bodies as a result of the show and was at the top of ferrari'***** list...they had just begun their legal attack on all things replica.

The transmission tunnel alone clearly shows the car on e-bay and the one displayed in the first magazine article (link) are different cars. The one on e-bay is all black and rounded, while the one from the article is tan with a black insert and more square. And I find it suspect that the seller is not the actual owner. What a load of crap.

The item description has been changed/amended on e-bay. The guy who bought the car out of the collection probably should have asked a few more questions.... I think it's fair (to all) that the guy amended his description.

Perhaps there's a reason that the grammatically-challenged eBay monkey isn't showing the front end of the car on his auction page...

I seem to remember that there was a contest and the MV "Daytona" was given away as first prize. I also remember there was some hassle with the winner actually getting his prize. Can anyone confirm this? Watching the show from the beginning I though, how cool, they're using a Ferrari in the show. When I found out is was a Corvette the show wasn't the same.

Mc Burnie had the replica Daytona bodies made in a town just outside of T.J. Mexico, I was there in 1990 at a shop and they had about 10 laying around along with the molds and 2 partially finished Corvette/Daytona replicas in his garage, the bodies were in black fibreglass, suprisingly its alot of work to convert a Vette to a Daytona replica, remaking body mounts etc.

The white TR was given away in a contest. You did something to get a key, you sat in the car and gave it a try, if it started it was yours. I recall a woman won the car... no one konws what ever happened to it though.

Back in 1991 or 1992 I used to work at the Collection garage in Coral Gables and both Miami Vice cars were there a few times. I even drove the TR around.
The TR had a tiny gold badge on the rear bumper that said universal pictures and I think the Daytona did aswell. I may have some photos somewhere and will take a look.
The point is the car stilled existed then, maybe they used more than one Daytona during filming?

Not totally sure on this, but I thought they used multiple Daytona replicas on the show (just like they used several TRs). So theoretically this could be one of them, although I doubt it.

I have an article at home where one of the owners of a real TV show replica talks about how he ended up with the car. As he opened the trunk there was a bag with some papers allegedly from Don Johnson.

Hey, si non e vera, e bon trovata!

there is a guy in New Jersey that has a McBurnie replica for around $18k, the car has been for sale for almost 2 years. he runs ads in the Autotrader and seems to have a lot of kit cars for sale. the McBurnie cars are nice, i wouldnt mind having one ( cheap ) with a manual trans. most were built on auto cars and the Vette's from that era suck unless the engines are modified.

EDIT : THE MIAMI VICE SEASON ONE DVD COMES OUT FEBRUARY 8. your welcome :)

I think I have seen that one, several things flawed with it like e.g. the square (Vette) front lights. Not that it couldn't be fixed, but it always amazes me that these folk go through the trouble of changing the entire body, but then "forget" to put in round lamps or mix up the rear lights. Beats me.

Engine is an easy fix: Just put an Edelbrock or similar in. Up to 450 hp if you like.

I actually remember watching that episode the night it first aired. I really liked that show. I was in high school from 82-86 and it was a really big deal then. I was always out on Fri nights but I would tape it on a BETA machine (no kidding) and watch it on Sat. I still have 20 or 30 of those old beta tapes full of original Miami Vice and Magnum.

Tommy, wow, Beta!!!! I feel so old! I was in university during the VICE years. I've got 5 seasons (minus a few 1st season episodes) on VHS....and all I can say is thank God it's coming out on DVD.

    Same here.
Interestingly enough there are even today active fan clubs. Especially folks from Germany (the show was a big hit on German TV). They celebrate annual reunion parties in Miami and visit some of the on set locations.

I am glad about the DVD's too. Now the only real value my old Beta tapes have are the old commercials. It's fun to watch the ads for the "new" 84 model cars, etc.

Yes, my old Beta machine still works.

One of the advantages of working at a TV station is that there are dozens of video tape recorders available at any time. I work at an ABC station, but back during the Miami Vice era, I always switched a tuner over to the local NBC station and recorded the show on a Sony U-Matic 3/4 inch videocassette deck while I went about my work duties. When the show was over I just rewound the tape for instant hi-grade playback. Somewhere about that time we got our satellite dishes and then I picked it up straight off the NBC ku-band satellite feed. That's also the way I recorded Johnny Carson's last show. I went all out for Johnny by recording his show on 1 inch videotape. But I recorded the last Miami Vice at home on VHS. I labeled the tape: "Into the sunset with Crockett and Tubbs" and drew a Ferrari Daytona on the label. I still have it somewhere in storage.

Arlie, thats really cool! i wonder how long VHS tapes will hold a good picture before they degrade?

My understanding is that ferrari won the lawsuit against the maker of those replicas at the time they were used on miami vice.
Ferrari claimed patent on the design of the car thus the cars could no longer be made.
part of the settlement was that the car on the show (due to the blatent impression that the fake ferrari was real) and all the molds to make the bodies had to be (and were) destroyed.

I was told that the show car was destroyed on air as rumored.

Though he made many cars before this happened that were sold and could not be recovered in the settlement. It is most probably is one of those cars.

I believe that ferrari offered the use of the two White Testarossas (that were originally black, but that is another story) to the show for there cooperation in the settlement of the case. Not unusual since they had a similar arrangement with Magnum P.I. show.

This is the story as I know it.

IMO that is not the real show car.

    Best regards, Jim

Good question. Being in the videotape business, I'm especially critical of video quality. I've seen many old videos on various TV shows where they pull out very old video for anniversary specials and such. I can usually tell that it's old by the audio quality. The bass response will usually start degrading after many generations of dubbing thereby causing the audio to sound "tinny" like it was recorded over the telephone. The video will also have a "foggier" look to it. Some of this foggy look is generational degradation from repeated dubbing. But some is from "print through"; meaning that one layer of tape is magnetized and affected by the next layer of tape tightly wound against it. Everybody extoled the virtues of home videotaping by taking videos of kids birthday partys and graduations, etc. But film is a much more permanent medium. The physical characteristics of videotape and the cartridge that encloses the tape are fairly delicate. Smart money says that Joey's first birthday party videotape will never be viewed by Joey's children, much less his grandkids. The newer wave of technology is much better. Record an image on digital tape, then dub it to a DVD. It will last essentially forever because there is no magnetic degradation PROVIDED that years from now the proper DVD player will still exist.
