I've always liked synthesizer music, but there are so many new bands and I don't know where to start. Like many people I like the brassy, busy stuff like Alan Parson's Project "I Robot". I also like Vangelis and have his stuff, but there's lots of new bands...where do I begin? Oh, and preferably no vocals.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

I also like electronica (many hours listening to Kitaro and such as a kid). A good band that's hot right now is called The Postal Service, kind of "pop-synth ballads." It has vocals but is very catchy.

There's a group called Air that I think is French but has jazz-groove type electronic (sans vocals).

The soundtrack from Lost in Translation has a great mix of electronica and alternative music with vocals (but heavy on synth).

Robert Miles is good but is sooo 1997 ;).

You might want to check out "trance" music too. It's the melodic and mellow dance/club music with typically minimal vocals.

A good place to look for new names is Billboard Magazine's Top 10 or whatever -- they have an electronica section (which is generally used for all dance/electronic music).http://www.billboard.com/bb/charts/electronic.jsp

That's right, "trance" is also another name for what I'm looking for.
I go to the used record store and even they have so many artists that I don't have the time to listen to them all to choose. I like those long pieces that just go on and on...

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Still, anyone wanna put some more names out I'm all ears!

    Thanks!

Listen to ones like Vocal Trance, they give the artist information as they are playing. I write down the ones I like as I hear them.

www.djdoboy.com has a few mixes for download, and some of the songs are pretty good.

Tiesto is among the biggest names. Paul Oakenfold is good too. I love Ian Van Dahl, but he has vocals on his tracks (girl singing).

Zero Seven. Although a few tracks have vocals, they're not irritating. Spin magazine called their first release, Simple Things, the baby-making CD of 2002. Some great, great bass lines!

In all your spare time.. try this out. I have it installed on my pc.

    http://www.spinner.com/download.html

This pipes in music from ALL SORTS of genre's. There's a section of Electronica music that breaks down into sub genre's. It's pure uninterupted music that streams endlessly. If you like a song, there's a tab that will let you wiew the CD and buy it if you wish. Cool stuff.

    What, nobody likes Kraftwerk??

The mellow Meat Beat Manifesto is excellent.

Some of the Ibiza mixes are good too.

got some of their albums around somewhere, haven't listened for years.

IMHO, some of the best electronica came about in the early 90's, we were just getting past the "everything is moog" phase and we were still before the age of any-****-can-afford-a-full-computer-studio.

i was pretty heavily into the rave scene back then, so trance, techno and rave were my staple diet. there's a million artists worth mentioning, but it's easier to just grab some various LP's from the period.

Trance Europe Express was a great label, i've got two of their electronica albums (2 cd's each) and each one came with a fat-ass book with full bio and history of each of the artists.

man, i bet some of the young'uns here feel the same way about me talking of the early 90's - 15 YEARS AGO DAMMIT, AM I DOING MY MATH WRONG!!?? - as i felt back then of old people talking about the late 70's. sigh.

Thanks for the list, but that's kinda my problem...too many to choose from. It's like you listed the whole record store! I especially appreciate the replies that only mention 2 or 3. Do you wanna suggest 2 or 3 out of your list?

Again, I like the long pieces with lots of synthesizer. Last try I picked up a CD by Yellow Light Orchestra...good stuff, but the pieces were too short.

Thanks again guys for all of the posts! I'm going shopping this weekend with your suggestions. I'll let you know how I make out.

Well thanks for all the tips guys I got some good stuff!!!

The used record store I checked out on Saturday didn't have practically everything mentionted EXCEPT it had The Orb (U F OFF) a collection, as well as one by Orbital (Snivilisation). I love them BOTH!!! Thanks a whole bunch. I wouldn't have known where to start without your tips...I really appreciate it!

I hope these two bands (or whatever you call them) have like 100 albums 'cause I can really see myself buying more of their stuff.

I'm still gonna look for some others on the lists, but I think my favorite now is Orbital, although I laughed at the sa-sa-sampling The Orb does on "Fluffy White Clouds"...I AM supposed to laugh, aren't I?

    Thanks again!!

Well, if you don't understand japanese, lyrics can be just another instrument. ;)

You could look over http://www.jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/music.php with a rather wide variety of styles -- most with vocals, though. And all from the same composer: Yoko Kanno. Or tune into (adult swim) cartoon net saturday night to check out the music on "Ghost in the Shell/Stand Alone Complex", "Cowboy Bebop", and weeknights for "Wolf's Rain".

I'm partial to the Bebop stuff, myself, but "Inner Universe" from GitS/SAC is fairly techno. The site listed above has a sampling of YK's diverse styles on different projects.

I tried ordering Kraftwerk last fall and was told it is out of print. Ideas?

I picked up "Love and Rockets, Lift" a while back, more Techno I think.
The first four tracks are really strong and compelling. Good driving music.
