Go above whoever you are talking to at the current host company. They are playing games with you. Data loss is no game and should be handled very quickly and without hesitation(sp). Any normal company would have had you back up with 3 days and that is with a disk recovery.

That is a very bad sign. I take it that this current host is not local to you? Find out who else they provide support to and let the host know that you are going to let everyone else know what type of support the give to their customers. How are you ever going to know if they send that drive out to get recovered? They have lied to you already about doing that my guess is they f#@ked up the drive so bad that it will be a total loss.

Their backup/restore procedures were faulty and the cost to recover the drive is going to be your responsibility? That doesn't make much sense, does it?

Im curious, did they ever test their restore/recover process before this failure?

BTW, Drive Savers is very professional and good to do business with.

Anyway, not looking great. Corruption spread throughout, not just one area. No physical damage to drive, but something with the references.

Tomorrow he will let me know what parts are recovered. Worst case on the images is they can be recovered, but won't have the same names, so software will never be able to link back. However, the images could be thrown into a gallery.

Should get a better status tomorrow.

I'm not that concerned with the images, most of the members here included myself saved their old photos. It’s the information from the old F Chat site that I fear that maybe gone, almost four years of combined Ferrari history & knowledge wiped out. I really hope it can be saved.

fyi/fwiw, archive.org appears to have the pre-vb board safely stored in the way back machine.

Nope -- unfortunately, if you actually follow the board links at archive.org, most of them are non-indexed and unavailable. :(

I'm not sure how much of the old board they'll recover, but I already have some of it, it is just hard to tell how much. I haven't loaded the actual software back to see, but I know many of the files are still there.

I'm expecting we'll have some of the old board and images and some of the images from the new board, but not 100%.

I'm always an optimist and that is we didn't loose any messages on the new software. Although only 13 months time, two-thirds of all the messages ever on FerrariChat.com were within those previous 13 months. I know the old messages are still very important (Ed, JRV, and Magoo bickering :)) and at worse we already have many of them recovered.

More updates soon now that I have the dialogue going with the Drive Savers tech.

Recovery progress news is certainly encouraging.

Any chance eventually we could individually edit our old TechQ&A posts to add replacements for the lost images?

Or something more sophisticated like getting a list of all our posts & the image links & supplying new images for the links?

that wasn't my experience. the couple discus board links i dug through were all intact. the vb stuff was not, but the old board was.

just checked it again. as best i can tell, it's ALL there:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20031205163247/www.ferrarichat.com/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi
i dug all over it and didn't find a single bad/unstored link in the tree.

some of the threads have their embedded pictures still:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20031231084637/www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/342928.html?1067656312

    but some do not:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20030930002939/www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/1121/210389.html?1057279450

rob - you should see if you can get someone to spider the archive.org stuff and at least generate static HTML from there. you'd in theory get all the text back from the discus board, and maybe some good chunk of the pictures.

    doody.

Very good idea. I know most images are on everyone's hard drive. Considering half of images aren't even important ("Owned" or "I'd Hit That"), this would be a good effort.

Lets see after everything is recovered where the holes are.

    Thanks.

OK, just talked to the Drive Savers tech. They're loading a new drive with everything they could recover and are sending back to the host. I guess it will now be a week or two before I can touch it and evaluate the recovery. Here is what it sounds like…

    1) Sounds like most images off the new software through the crash have been recovered. That still leaves the issue whether or not the software will be able to link them all back in without problems though.

    2) None of the newsletters could be recovered, so if someone could help me out if they saved any of those HTML's or even printed them off. I know Peter saved copies for awhile. What might be better is if you can check that archive site to see if any of the newsletters are there.

    3) Looks like some of the Parts & Service articles were recovered.

    4) None of the old software was recovered. However, between what I've already recovered plus a 700 Mb. tar file backup I did of the old software at some point, then it at least sounds like much of the old stuff is recovered.

There won't be any more updates until they get the drive and load it. I'll update you when I hear something.

Why isn't there anything after Jan. 2004? That's what I really need for the newsletters.

Drive Savers is shipping the new drive to the host today. Will be there Monday, who knows how long it takes the host to give me access and inspect. They haven't been very nice to me lately. I guess they are predicting what is coming.

My tail is hurting really bad right now, not sure if it is my participation in the Spongebob thread or all the money I have paid for bad backups and now to Drive Savers.

I just want it all over with.

Isn't the current hosting company going to give you anything for the f@#ked back-ups they were doing? I'm not a lawyer but I would guess if you are paying for a service that is not being down there is something owed to you.
