Well... I've heard it a thousand times... "Ferraris(or Lotus, Lambo, etc..) will go bad if not driven often..", or "Ferraris get better the more you drive it..."

Okay... May someone explain to me like I'm a Sixth Grade student WHY a Honda can stay in the garage for 3 months w/o being driven then start up and be driven without problems. A Ferrari/Lotus/etc.. will, more than likely, start having issues, possible leaks, etc.. Why are the mechanics, materials, etc.. SO different that a Ferrari would actually get better being driven while regular cars won't mind spending a winter indoors...???

    Remember... sixth grade explanation..

Thank in advance for the schooling on this...

    Rick

I think a lot of it has to do with being a larger, high performance engine. Compared to a Honda which has less moving parts. A ferrari motor has a hell of a lot more parts that need lubrication and such, so I would assume the longer it sits without those fluids the harder it may be to start and possibly easier for parts to break. Start up a civic motor and you have 4 cylinders moving to create 115 hp, start up a 360 and its 8 cylinders to create about 400 hp. Huge difference especially in the winter months. I don't own a Ferrari nor am I mechanic so don't take my word for it.

Parts such as seals, hoses, belts and gaskets, ect..detriote much faster if not used as they get no lubercation when the engine is not running. Also, belts 'set up' in the postion they are left in for a long periods of time without moving. For a cam belt(s), that can be diasterous if it causes the belt to skip a tooth or jump off the pulley(s). Electrical parts also corrode quicker if left unused and develope 'gremlins' that can be difficult, i.e expensive to diagnose. Things like shocks and suspension bushings also detrioate and can 'lock up' from sitting for long periods of time. Radiators corrode, leather dries out, and other moving parts like brake calipers ,ect... can lock up due to none use. Even tires can go bad due to flat spots forming from not rolling for months. While a garge queen may look good cosmetically, they are often a nightmare to a new owner that wants to start driving his car a few thousand miles a year.

You only hear this in relation to exotics because people do not drive them as often for fear of hurting them, wearing them out or depreciting them. If hondas were very cherished you would hear the same thing. This happens with any mechanical tool, motor, tranny etc.. The more you drive any boat, car, motorcycle the better it is going to run. The salesman that sold me my boat said to run the generator often and for long periods of time and it will last forever. Run it infrequently and it will soon have problems.

Most honda engines are built for reliability & durability, Not performance. So they rev low & are not highly stressed, sort of like a donkey which is slow but strong

A Ferrari engine is a lot more like a race horse, its built for massive power, high revs, & high stress. Its an athlete, the more it revs the better it gets. So if an athlete just sits around all day doing nothing then decides all of a sudden to go to the gym & workout without warming up he could get injured.

Also I think as far as starter motors Japanese quality in electronics is far superior to Italian quality

William I have to respectfully disagree. Honda is one of the most "rev happy" manufacturers out there. They are known for high revving motors (civic type R, integra Type R, s2000, nsx, civic Si) to name a few. It is common knowledge honda motors have no real torque on the bottom end, and you have to rev the %&%& out of them to get power.

Just wanted to make sure we got the right info to the youngin :)

I'd like to add aniother thought.

Engines that are built to be used at high rpms need to be spun out fairly regularly. This is esspecially true in the LT5 of the corvette zr1 where the second set of intake valves will acctually get siezed if not used regularly.

I can assume there are many parts in a Ferrari engine that are like this.

Just starting the car up in the garage is not good either. You gotta get it in gear and drive it a while or keep it in a climate controlled garage.
