Seems like I can't go anywhere in the three-sixty without getting a few new rock chips when I get back. It's F'n fragile and a PIA. On the other hand, on a new P-car I've got 2,500 miles on it and barely a mark. I figured out why. The bumper on the P is flexible and rocks have a tendency to bounce off. On the other hand the bumper on the F is more solid and rocks have a tendency to chip the paint. It's too late for the 3M product but will do it next time around. My question is, given this why does Ferrari still use a more solid material as the basis for the bumper that creates this problem????? Wouldn't it make sense to "get with the program?"

LOL, well we've seen the Ferrari "program" is to create business in the repair market. Small companies like Ferrari will never be like Honda where you get the feeling the designers actually drive the car so as to fix glitches. It's part of the charm of Ferrari.

Thank goodness for the guys at Langka.com -- they make it almost painless and invisible to touch up the inevitable rock chips. They're also a Ferrari Club sponsor.

I agree, this stuff really works. I've touched up several dozen chips on my car.

BTW, I'm using some $2.99 touch up paint I got at Pep Boys. Took the car, asked the guy behind the counter if I could take the dozen or so red colors out to look for a match and he said, "NO PROBLEM"

Turns out Volkswagen red and my Dino are exactly the same color.

This stuff, combined with Langka's system, really work great.

I consider rock chips a badge-of-honor. Look at the bumper less and drive the car more. ;)

I don't bother with the nose of the car. Just where body parts meet, or chips in the doors and such.

I could spend all day doing the nose, and I still wouldn't be done.

So you can have, an "AMEN!!"

I had to replace the windshield and have the entire front end repainted on my 911 after 13k miles! It was so pitted it looked like someone oversprayed my black car with white paint. Porsche paint is notoriously soft. The Stradale does get it's fair share but I did have the clear bra put on this one so it's not nearly as bad.

got one chip, put the 3m product on, no problems since then w/8k miles on car. Otherwise, 600 - 800 each and every year, or wear the chips.

I think it may have more to do with the paint. I noticed that folks who have repainted the bumper on their 360, end up with a more chip resistance after. I hear that most body shops will add more "flex agent" which allows the paint to have more "give" from the rock strike....rather than fracture the paint.

I would just live with it until you can't stand it, get it repainted then Stongard it...in the mean time, drive on ;)

My front bumper looks like it has white freckles all over it. I drive my 348 quite a bit, and get rock chips all the time. I have given up trying to keep the bumper from getting chips. So I just drive the car and enjoy it. I'm gonna let the road do all the sanding. After the rocks have chipped off all the red then I'll just paint it. Saves me the trouble of sanding. Hahahaha. Now what really bites, is when you get a rock chip on the windshield! That sucks big time!

Do rock chips occur only if there are cars in front of you?

Not mine I swear I just look at it and......J/K. Yea, this is the only way it happens.

It's true. But Ferraris are notorious for having very thin paint, too.

Chips - while no one likes them are part of the patina of a car that's really driven.

Generally you get chips from following too close or a car in front of you in another lane. Typically it takes freeway speeds to get chips, I avoid driving my cars on busy freeways and hit the desolate ones and I have no chips.

You can get chips from oncomming traffic on a 2 lane highway, especially heavy trucks as they create such turbulence rocks are flying all over being picked up from the shoulder etc.

Dave, or whoever else has used this stuff - does this product yield a repair that is level with the surrounding paint? i.e. if the chip is deep and the size of, say, a grain of rice? Or does it simply cover the chip with color, and leave a slight dimple, akin to acne scarring?

I rarely get rock chicps. I am always ahead of everybody :)

just kidding. My front bumper after Cavallino Classic and Sat track is white not blue anymore.
So you send it out to get repainted. Big deal. Stongard works wonders though :)

I look at my 360 and it gets a chip. The first one is the toughest. I too have used Lanka and it does work great. I want a pin strippers brush to touch up with because they have a small point.
For those of you unbothered by chips , you truly are lucky men. I may get a track car in the future. I tracked my 355 in Road Atlanta a few years ago and dropped it off at the dealer to get new tires and paint touch to the front bumper and a wheel that caught a rock. Tha't a blast.
I think a track car is the awnwer.

I once asked on of the East Coast's leading Ferrari restorers, Dick VonMedicus, what it would take to get some touch-up paint (OEM Glasurit samples are difficult if not impossible to obtain in small quantities these days). He looked at me and said "Wear your stone chips with pride!"

    'nuff said.

And I thought it was just me. My 355 was resprayed every year and the shop charged me a little over $2000 each time. Got a clear bra several yrs ago and no more chips........saved me $6000 already. Get a clear bra and tap the throttle to 150mph and feel safe from road crap - make sure you get someone good though.
