I saw this picture of the engine bay of a '65 330 GT 2+2, linked to in a vintage thread. It made me wonder the purpose of the semi-elliptical hollow tubes pointing out of the air cleaner and aimed down at the fenderwells.

What is the functionality of this? Is there a flap that opens and warm air is drawn during warmup, and then the flap closes upon reaching operating temperatures? Or is all intake air drawn through those tubes? The proximity to the exhaust headers made me curious - that has to be the worst place for air to be drawn when the headers are hot.

    Thanks :)

    Howdy fellow Texan,
Those long tubes are the air intakes to the air box. There are no flaps in them. They suck hot air from the engine compartment at all times. They pull air right above the exhaust headers. The headers have factory heat shields mounted on top (if they are still there). The shields , hopefully, help deflect some of that heat away from the nozzles AND the spark plug wires.
    Ciau,
    Tom

First @500 Series I had an open-faced assembly.
As pictured, side snorkels were on interim (next @125 of the 4-headlighters) and all Series II 2 + 2s. All S1 4-headlighters had 11 louvres, and all S2 2-headlighters had 3 louvres - so, it wasn't a louvre-specific design.

Perhaps someone who has experienced Series I & II can educate us on air intake difference, if such was the case.

Who knows, might have been made this way to take greater advantage of electric cut-in-fans - cool write-up.

My thinking is that the snorkles actually draw in COOLER air, compared to the open type air filter assy that sits at the very top of the hot engine compartment.

That said, I prefer the look of the older style.

    I agree with JonBrent.

If the car is stationary, it probably doesn't matter: the engine will be sucking in very warm air. If the car is at speed, I think that the snorkels help, despite the closeness to the headers.

My car has the later intake, although I prefer the look of the earlier pancake box myself.

Boy, does that engine compartment get hot...

    Which brings up another question:

On the picture that FarmerDave posted, the horizontal lines on the cam covers are unpainted, as is the Ferrari logo. On mine, only the Ferrari logo is unpainted. On other cars I've seen, that crackle black covers everything.

Which is correct? Or, which is correct for what years?

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt,

I am almost certain that everything should be painted black,

On 330 GT models, everything is black except for the flat area ahead of the firing order plate (where the engine type, '209', is stamped). That's left unpainted. Confirmed by an early factory picture of an engine bay.

    Regards, Kerry

I think the whole flat area that the firing order plate sits on is unpainted. You can barely see the unpainted edges underneath the perimeter of the plate but from what I have seen, it is unpainted also.

Might help a bit when cold starting - the headers will get hot first, and this is when warmer air to the carbs is useful.

At which point the engine is already running...
