Dexter, you maybe ok with the synthetic. LFSC also told me they use castrol dino gtx 20/50. There really is no way to tell if the car was ever run on synthetic...especially since they are going on 15-20 years old now.

By the way, how are you enjoying the car?!

I dont want to get back into the oil argument, just suffice to say that the Mercedes Benz club generally only suggested using synth in diesels and then only in cold weather, as it tends to cause leaks. Argue with them if you want, not me. But as they said, and I agree, we (MB) have cars (gas and diesel) all over the world with milages over 750,000 miles on dino oil, and they run great.
As to an engine burning oil shortly after startup, I have only seen it once. I got a Honda Civic from a friend that I hoped I could give to my neice, but about one minute after startup, it would smoke so bad it fogged out the whole yard so thick you couldnt see your hands. A few minutes later it cleared out and ran great.
I used a can of motor flush on it and changed the oil. It never smoked again. I believe the oil rings were gummed up and the flush and new oil got them working again. Dont know as I would pour motor flush into a Ferrari though. You should change the oil dude, just pull the plug and let her go.
I bought a MB 300E that was using a quart every 400 miles. I never added a quart. I just changed it every time it went down a quart. Next thing it was 700 miles, next was around a 1000, next was like 1700 miles. After that it never used oil between 3000 mile changes. Was running like that at 197K when I sold it, and it ran great. Good luck.

I had the belts changed on my 512TR by a ferrari garage in the UK. the fresh oil used was Shell fully synthetic, now I have noticed oil smoke on start up and if the car is left on a slope for more than a few minutes I get considerable smoke for about the first mile. This did not happen before the service, the car was then using Shell helix blue. I've been told not to worry about this,to stay with the synthetic oil as its better for the engine, however the smoke is beginning to annoy,so may go back to the original oil.

FYI, Ferrari road cars have ALL came from the factory with synthetic or synthetic blend oil since the 308. What do you think "sint" in the Agip SINT2000 means? Sint=Italian abreviation for synthetic. Look at the oil plate in your engine compartment or in the OM and see if you don't see Sint.

Just updating my old "paranoia" threads. I have now managed to drive the testarossa on a 55 degree day, and guess what. It didn't smoke. It seems the weather/condensation has a LOT to do with it. And, also does being a paranoid new owner...

Ok, further follow-up...still puzzled about smoke on start-up:

Car runs great. Last added quart of oil about 1200 miles ago...went to mid-stick, now reading slightly above low mark. Car drips minimal oil...

Car rarely smoke on start-up. But on rare occasion, when I start it, I get a VERY large puff of smoke. Doesn't seem to matter if it has been sitting a day or 2 weeks. Very random...

    What causes this???

If it were a ring, I would think it would smoke each time...ditto for a valve guide...

The smoke 1 - 5 minutes after startup is long gone - this was almost certainly condensation...

    Any other thoughts?

Sounds like maybe the exhaust valve guides have a little wear and are passing a bit of oil on you. When the car is running and hot, the oil just gets burned off. When the car is shut off, the oil leaks past the guides and just sits in the exhaust manifold waiting for you to start the car.

    Just a theory...........

I say exhaust rather than intake because the car seems to start and run alright and the plugs probably aren't getting fouled. So the leak must be after the cylinder rather than before it.

    Just a theory...........
