I came back to Boston from a weekend trip to NH - where it only snowed 4-6", vs. 2 ft+ for Boston - and my neighbor's two Porsches (a 71 and an 85, IIRC) are not going anywhere fast. :)

They drive really well in the snow actually, no problem......"been there done that".......if they are dug out of it that is..........

I lived in Kingston, Ontario for 8 years and it was like that sometimes....I remember once my dad pushed me out the kitchen window so I could shovel snow for the space to open the door.

Anyone have any experience w/ the 993 AWD 996 AWD (either the Carrerra 4 or the Turbo?) Snow or heavy rain... use snowtires? Just in snow season or year round?

    Thanks,

    Nick

i drove my 996TT a few years back through nearly an entire boston winter - on the stock, hardly-snow tires. the AWD system is pretty damn good. i was surprised and pleased (and damn careful).

    doody.

    Nick,

No snow where I live. However, my TT acts as my beater car often. It has been driven through the heavy rain (flood) conditions in So Cal the last few weeks. I had it up in Oregon a few weeks before that. Car is on stock tires. Performed great. It was very confidence inspiring, unlike my RWD Lexus and few other cars I have used to make the LA to Seattle trip.

    On a scale of 10, I would give it a 7.

    Mine is a 996. Wish it was a 993 :(

I used to take my 911 skiing all the time. It was an '86 and handled very well.

How weird... not 30 minutes after I typed my question did I see on SPEEDVISION a series on the 996 C4's snow capability!

They were taking corners w/ the all-wheel-drive and it looked extremely capable. They just had regular road-tires on it too. Then they took the traction/AWD off and spun donuts in the snow!

    Seems pretty good...

PS- thanks for the info Doody & Ryan.

just got this emailed to me. Never thought I'd be on a Ferrari board! Ryan, stop by some time when I'm working on the cars.

The 84 can take the snow, and honestly covered up in a caccoon was the best thing for it. The 69E is a different story, and yes, the car should be taken away from me by some sort of automotive version health and human services. Lost storage for the winter, well actually the 73 GT3-S project took it's place, but I just got it in safe and sound for the rest of the winter, no worries there.

Dug the 84 out. Which do you like better? The 7x9x17 Cup IIs or the 8x9x15 Fuchs, which after the rear tires wear out, I'll have to handcut some Avon slicks for tires.

LOL!! What a small world. We've met briefly before back in '03 (I live on Shaler with the blue WRX), but I'll be sure to introduce myself again whenever I see you out there.

I'm not a Fuchs fan to be honest, but like the Cup II's a lot.

Welcome to the board Shaun and yeah...try and take better care of those 911's will ya! ;-)

I knew it was only a matter of time before you became a regular on Fchat. Rennlist and Pelican just don't compare. Ha.

BTW, fill out your profile so everyone will know how much of a nut you really are. :)

I'll be out in about 2-3 weeks depending on the snow. Hope to get my 70% complete track car on the street and finished mechanically before I go to paint. Everything is either plastic or POR15, so it could literally be sprayed with salt and be OK, although the Fikse's are staying in the basement!

993, profile filled out, how do you get a signature like on Pelican:

well as long as clearance is not a problem, the 996ttS drives perfect in snow...although i would not do it on purpose unless u get caught in a snowstorm, due to other drivers on the road whom i dont trust...

I drove my 996TT through a winter in Buffalo when I first bought it and I didnt have any issues other than in VERY deep snow. They are great with the AWD system!

Did you put a ski rack on the top of your 911? I have always wondered what a 911 witha ski rack would look like.

I have had a C4S which I put blizzack LM22s on for the winter, the car drives great in the snow, no problems except for clearance. And if it snows that much here everything is shut down anyways. I now have a Turbo S with the same blizzack LM 22s and it drives just as well, you gotta love PSM. Great cars regardless of weather conditions.

    Hi Shaun,

good to see, that there are a few more Porsche-lovers on FChat. :)

There is only ONE answer: Fuchs!!! ;)

... and please do me a favor: Please remove the RS-"Entenbürzel" from the Targa. ;) This spoiler is only for the ´73 RS. ;)

Could you please explain, what you mean with "73 GT3-S project"?

btw. all 911 are excellent winter-cars, not only the 4S.

I had a 911 C4 for years...........it was excellent in the snow!! I think at the time I had a set of Blizzaks on the wheels.
