making me hungry..although I don't think I have a very refined taste since the stuff I had in Japan tasted no different to me than the stuff I get at the local bar in Southlake. Eel is my FAVORITE..there is a tempura eel w/cream cheese and avocado. so much for being "healthy"

or as my sister says it "you have a dutch mustache..."

very funny reading japanese in romaji! (roman alphabet)

I was told that once I tried it that I would crave it, and I have to say thats the truth in my case. I've only tried one place several times, Kamado's (sp?) in B.R. and it kills my cravings. So what about the one near school, let me know when you try it, i'd like to try some others.

And as far as raw goes, their Spicy Tuna Roll is raw and its one of my favorites, but there's not actually that much fish on it.

Dan, there are literally hundreds in the bay area. I've also heard of but never tried the sushi nazi in sunnyvale... San Mateo is like little Japan there are sushi places right next door to each other.

I have been to blowfish and tokyo gogo many many times when with a crowd, they are not traditional... and the fish are always fresh. We tried Ozumo a couple of weeks ago and it was just way too expensive for a little food they brought. If I somewhere and get a hint that I am not having quality fish I am out of there in a second, can't leave that stuff for chance they can be pretty destructive and painful. That's probably I was shy at first to try it.

Next time we do lunch we should do sushi...

    No can do Uni.

Also cannot stomach Salmon roe. I caught too many trout with it as a child to consider it anything but bait.

    Spicy tuna hand roll mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

    I LOVE EEL!

I ordered it by accident the first time and loved it! The local place here in Baltimore (actually Towson) makes good sushi (at least the best I have as of yet had on the EC). I love their Dragon Rolls: eel and a bit of flying fish roe on top and I think crab inside with avacado, if I recall.

Does everyone eat it with the ginger? I hope so, I read somewhere that you are supposed to eat the ginger to kill any possible tape worms in the sushi. So remember next time you order Sushi, ask for extra ginger.

This must be one of those urban legends or the fish that comes out of the hudson river. The remedy for that is lots of sake and ichiban. I take very little ginger! Plus I hope the sushi place lose their license if they serve worm infested fish...

I see Eric & Rob's wife are doing well on Japanese. You cannot post Japanese fonts here. I tried before, and it just shows "??????".

Even for me, after reading this thread, I felt like going to Sushi bar tonight. I just may make my friends' mind to change, even though we're meeting at Chinese restaurant!

I enjoy sushi myself about once a week or twice. I also like the tuna the most. I can always say butt light in any language and have a beer.

Thanks for the recommendation. The place with the smell is in hammond and I can't remember the name. I've been there twice and it has had the same smell each time. I won't go back unless I'm dragged there.

MAN! Stumbling across this thread has made me HUNGRY (ONAKA SUITA-NE)!!!

Bring it on!!! It's all good. There are a lot of places in LA but my girl and I love HAMAKAWA in little Tokyo.

As for experiences in Japan, here are a couple of memorable ones.

Having lobster sashimi and my lobster walks off my plate as I finish the last piece of the tail.

Boiling soup with tofu cubes. Then add live baby eels. The eels burrow into the tofu to get out of the heat and that's when you go for the tofu.

Ah, the days of expense accounts and entertaining in Ropongi.

Judge4re, at $180/person, you got off cheap! :)

I'm impressed that you went for these food. BTW, it's not baby eel, they are loaches. I prefer eels much better as loaches sometimes smell like mud (like catfish)

Yes, Eric $180/person at Roppongi's serious night fun is very reasonable! We missed each other in November, but we'll meet there in the future!

I'm surprised that there are more people who understand Japanese on this site.

Ah, that reminds me, uni shooters. Uni = sea urchin roe (orange boogers as Bobafett calls them) + a raw quail egg on top. Wonderful stuff.

And yes, $180 that night was cheap. My record in Tokyo is ~$3000 per person. Shabu-shabu + 2 hours at hostess bar. Ouch.
