Yeah, it seems like Massachusetts has a lot of portable signs that do that. It's been really ticking me off lately while driving between college and home.

Fortunately, that's the only state I've seen them in.

The V1 doesn't need a direct hit to warn of oncoming laser. When travelling the 130 or so miles one way from San Diego to Los Angeles and back each weekend when I used to live down there, I've been warned of laser hitting someone else on the opposite side of the freeway. Also, merging onto the Las Virgenes 101 South on ramp, a motorcycle cop was lasering someone on the freeway and I was out of line of sight and at a 90 degree angle facing moving traffic and the V1 detected the "bounce."

The one thing I do find annoying are the Infiniti FX series SUVs that emit laser for either cruise control or monitoring distance. :(

A question for the attorneys in California -- are Laser Shifters (not Detectors, but the "countermeasure" devices) illegal in California? The Motor Trend review article (link above) suggests that they are.

    Thanks,

    Let's beat the dead horse.
I have used the V1 and Escort. I now have two V1's and Ebay helped discard the Escort. There is no comparison. In a 355, because of the converter, you cannot wire into the map light. You can run your wire across the headliner and down the winshield pillar. You can go passenger or driver side. There is power and a ground on either side as I remember. The unit will mount in the sunshield and not be easily seen.

My V1 is install into my map light on my 355, search here I posted pics of it last summer, the power cord only needs around 6 inchs for the hookup, there is no converter.

Would you please expand upon your comment, "there is no comparison" -- i.e. specific features/performance/etc. advantages and disadvantages?

My take is that the only potential advantage of the V1 (over the Excort X50) is the arrows -- I'm still in the evaluation process to determine whether or not that feature is of significant value to me. Most comparisons of V1 vs. Passport X50 suggest that they are comparable in terms of their ability to identify radar at comparable distances (and here I'm disregarding the radartest.com review as potentially biased, since people claim that they are owned by Escort).

Also, I was under the impression that both the V1 and the Passport could be wired directly -- i.e. without the "converter". I do know that the Passport has a direct wire cord that has no converter.

    Thanks,

    Joe

Michael355 - I can't seem to find the pics of your V1 install, although I do remember looking at them about a month ago. I've checked all you posts and can't find it...

I got my dad the Escort Solo S2 for Christmas but he said it had too many false alarms. So I returned it and got him the Passport 8500 X50 with the blue read out. My dad loves that one. It has saved him a few times already.

Am I the only one that drives the speed limit and doesn't need a radar detector? The 365 has a K40 in it that the previous owner put in it. I never even turn it on.

Neither can I, must have got lost in the server change over. Anyway It's very simple, you just drop down the dome light, find out the +/- and use a cut standard telephone cord for the V1, the power is constant so you have to remember to use the power button on the V1 when you stop.

I've used a V1 in several cars for many years but decided I wanted a cleaner install in the 355 so I had a K40 put in. I love the stealth install, but the protection no where near as good as the V1. We are talking more than 1/2 mile difference in range. With a V1 I feel protected, with the K40 I feel like it helps but still leaves me exposed.

That said, one advantage of the K40 is that with a V1 I often take the radar detector off the windshield when I am parked and hide it so the car is not broken into. Sometimes I am too lazy to put it back up and I drive around with nothing. With the K40, its always there and ready to go so I never drive without the detector on.

You never drive 56 mph in a 55 mph zone? That does not seem possible.

Rarely. I'm never the fastest guy out on the street. Maybe 3-5 miles over the limit at 70, but nobody is going to look twice at you at that.

Well...at least you are honest. You are not the guy that clogs up the fast lane though, are you?? :D ;)

(* Actually...I got a speeding ticket for 5 mph over in my NSX once. 70 mph in a 65 mph zone. :( )

Well, not directly. Indirectly, somebody will slow down in the left lane and look at the car while going around. :D

LOL my ticket troubles usually occur because I need to get around people doing the limit (left lane bandits).

The problem with a Ferrari is you are more likely to get a ticket going 65 in a 55 than a soccer mom doing 80 in her minivan!

How does the dome light assembly come out -- do you just pull it away from the leather piece surrounding it, or is it held on with screws?

    Thanks,

    Joe
