After a drive today, While pulling into the garage, the CHECK ENGINE 5-8 light came on and stayed on. The car started sputtering some. What could cause the light to come on? I want to check systems...just wondering what to check. I could not find any info in the owners manual. This is a 1995 355. Thank You.

most likely the 02 sensor. They are common and its an its a simple fix. It could also beyou thermalcouple ecu. they are a poor design and get fractures in them wich lets in moisture. they are pretty easy to check, try swapping them and see if the CEL goies to the 1-4 bank. you can get a new one for about $300 or maybe get a used one for half that. check the ecu first.

    Gents,

Is there a simple way to check the thermocouples on a '96 Spider ... I 'think' I only have 1 check engine light ... which is currently on ... for both banks, so doing a swop won't distinguish good from bad.

    Regards,

    Pete

If it's a US 95 model, there are pushbuttons adjacent to the ecus, which will cause the check engine lights to flash out the codes. Searching the forums should get you the procedure.
If you can't find it let me know, I'll scan & email that section of the WSM

My speedo sender has been irratic lately. The day the check engine light came on, the speedo was completely dead. I read that this could cause the check engine light to come on. A new speedo sender unit is coming Friday. I will switch it out and see if that helps.
One more question. If the problem is corrected, does the check engine light go off immediately? Is there a reset button?
    Thanks guys.

I think I'm correct in saying the malfunction code is stored in the computer, so to get the check engine light to go away (after the repair) you need to delete that code. There are several hand held diagnostic computers on the market that will erase the code. I use an Innova 3100 ... ~ $110 from local car part stores .. e.g. AutoZone.
