For the most part, people get to be jerks by being hard of listening. When they lose the ability to try to understand the other guy's perspective, they cease to expand their horizons and knowledge. Alas, this kind of self-imposed learning disability is reaching proportions typical of a dark age.

So there's little point trying, cleverly or otherwise, to bring light into a black hole in the intellectual universe.

I'd just let it go with, "Dude! It's a Ferrari."
(In person, this should go best with a facial expression you'd give to someone who asked what a car is.)

(Well, when I'm in a philosophical mood, I sometimes respond to obvious cases of overcompensated inferiority complex by saying, "Go build something" -- not that most people would follow the connection.)

By the way: Wasn't "laugh and point" Robin Williams' suggestion for "the world's most effective method of birth control"? ;)

Thats right, I'm compensating for all the stupid ugly appliances on the road and adding a lot of beauty & culture to the environment. If they cant appreciate that its not my fault that they have no appreciation for art and beuaty.

    Nice Lamborghini comment.

I'm smiling, and pointing, and laughing at you right now.

I am sure that Lambo was the SV edition tractor with an extra plow but they took the stickers off.

That nut case 355 Spider owner on the Race Around the World TV show really gave us Ferrari owners a black eye!

Whether it is a nice car, home, boat (nice anything), the oft-repeated "you/he must be compensating for something" is always said with that smug smirk that comes from thinking they're the first person clever enough to come up with this witticism. Just remember what fuels the comment: pure unadulterated jealousy.

Feel sorry for them, know that you don't have to defend your choice of possessions and walk away. People who resent other people's success aren't worth debating.

I agree. But, from the amount of people that now finance their "toys" i.e. Ferraris, I'm not sure if having a Ferrrai in your garage is necessarily a symbol of success anymore!

The laugh and don't let it bother you (or at least not act as if it does) is the best advice. I have used that when some ****** gets a road rage moment (usally they did something dumb, then direct the anger at the other person). I smile and wave. Not what they expected. Their reaction ranges from dumb look to more anger and frustration. Either is good for me.

The comment I hear at times is what do you NEED a Ferrari for? It makes no sense for transportation.

My response is: No more than you NEED sex other than for procreation.

How so? Infuriating a jerk teaches them nothing and moves them one step closer to violence.

Life is not a zero sum game. Their annoyance gives you no substantial benefit. If they need to belittle your lifestyle to feel better about their own, then pity them, don't counter-attack.

Well if its an attractive woman I suggest a test ride in the bedroom to verify. Never had the comment from a man, I guess my reponse to a man would be to look them in the eye and say, "at least I have got the car", know what I mean.

My opinion is any man making such a comment is feeling jealous and not necessarily about the car. A woman making the comment is looking for something bigger than what she has and this is a good opportunity for you to "adequatly" respond. Or you could respond by saying "yes and my next car is going to be even faster", ends the conversation right there.

Ahem.. I'm sure you're excluding the slut-mobile from the "beauty & culture" argument, right? ;)

I like the idea of laughing. Not just a little chuckle but laugh like you have never heard anything so funny in your life. Hold your sides and laugh like Tom Hanks in "The Money Pit" when the bath tub fell through the floor. Roll on the floor if possible. You know the person who made the comment will not be laughing and you will draw attention to them just standing there. It made me giggle just thinking about the scenario.

LOL- long before I was married I briefly dated a very hot stripper type. She had a bad rep for sleeping around though but rather than turn her down, I simply took penicillin the entire time we dated! Even back then I guess I was into "risk mangement". :)

    No, I don't, but I suppose I would say:

    I am trying to compensate...

... for how short life is. No, not my midlife crisis... how short your life is going to be.
... for you. Thanks for asking.
... for your miserable childhood. By the way, how are the mental scars healing?
... for your miserable adulthood. Better get a band-aid, I think I see a new mental scar, there.
... for the lack of pure, unadulterated joy one finds behind the wheel of certain cars. To me, this is that certain car. Either you get it, or you don't. Can't explain it to someone who can't or won't understand. If you want to get it, then get in the passenger seat. Either you get in, or you don't. Buckle up or shut up. And if you talk as much while you're in that seat as you do now, it's going to be a short ride.
