Cruising around San Diego this week, a red Nissan 300Z passed me by. Looked to be a 10 year old +/- car. I thought "heck, that looks a lot like my 348." As I pulled up beside it, it does indeed look a lot like a 348: The general shape of the car, windows, fenders, etc., all the way down to the tail lights - but instead of having actual "grates" over the lights, the 300Z has "psuedo" grates - just black striping separating the lights.

    So...was the 300Z supposed to be a 348 look-alike in its day?

Ya'll guys are being way too picky. I totally the similarities. They DONT exactly look alike but some of the lines flow similar to a 348/355.. Im sure if you could do some measurements (bumper, width, length, height) the ZX car would come close to 348 specs.

First of all, they look nothing alike. Second, the 300ZX came out before the 348.

The 348 is lower and wider. I can always tell a Ferrari at a distance because of the shape. The only time I'm mistaken is if it's a Lamborghini or Lotus Esprit.

What we car people forget is, that to 99% of all people those cars do actually look very similar. I've had my NSX mistaken for everything from a Camaro to a Lambo. Back when I owned a 300ZX, once when my wife and I were walking back to it, she started heading for a Chevy Cavalier of the same color. I expressed my dismay, and she shrugged and said "they look the same to me". OUCH!

Besides the 348's side strakes, to the untrained eye those cars could very well be the same model.

There are indeed some similarities. This thread ties in with the thread "Has Ferrari Lost its Magic"

Which is faster, the 300zx or the 348? I'd bet money that the 300 is cheaper to maintain :)

I owend a 300 TT zx for three years and sold it 18 months ago, it was a great car and can be tuned very easly, mine was upgraded to 450bhp. They can be tuned to 1000bhp. Great car and so easy to drive mine was a very late 90s car.
I saw 180ish from mine. And the engine is bullet proof, and so bloody smooth and quite compared to a ferrari engine. Was is not made for the US market?
These guys tuned and maintained mine, they are near me. www.zcenter.co.uk

Having owned the 300 and a few Fcars (but not the 348) I can say that replacing parts on the 300 can be more expensive than the Ferrari. Maintainance might be wider spread but with the TT the cost of keeping it perfect sometimes is the same.

i can definitely see the similarities in the 350-360 and 300-348. I think those of you that are criticizing must be the ones drinking. Get some glasses and some anger management.

When I first saw and read about the Z32 Z -- especially the twin-turbo -- I was floored. The car had all the good looks of Nissan's MID4-II concept car and a good chunk of its awesome mechanicals. The production car wasn't mid-engined or awd, but it did have the same engine, Super-HICAS steering and the same suspension. Best of all, it had the sleek looks of the MID4.

The MID4, especially the MID4-II, was my favorite concept car at the time, and knowing the new Z would be heavily based on it, I was more excited about it than the upcoming NSX. I eventually bought a NA Z32 (couldn't afford a turbo) and only sold it to make room for my 308.

I believe the MID4 appeared at car shows while Ferrari was still cranking out 308's.
