I have my car (1999 355 GTS, 21k mi.) in the dealer with the Slow Down light and Check Engine light in full bloom. They say that the cats and three ECU sensors are bad. They are checking on warranty for the cats.
Question of the day: Isn't it true that the factory cats are covered for eight years. There has been much discussion. I have not read anything definite.
    Thanks for the help.

Your cats are covered, the ECU's are not...which I cannot understand why, since they are part of the emission controls.

According to this EPA document, you are covered for 8 years/80,000 miles, and should include those cat ECU's...read the fine print:

Thanks much. This is what i needed. I am unfortunately still liable for $900 of ECU's plus whatever else might appear.

This is right from the posted link:

"...There are three specified major emission control components,
covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995
    and newer vehicles:

    * Catalytic converters.

    * The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU).

    * The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD)...."

while I am at it. One last question: Headers are not covered for anything longer than the factory 2yr. warranty?

It "depends". I have found from talking to dealers, and reading posts on various sites that sometimes they will, sometimes not. Big contributors is if the car has been FNA dealer serviced and your relationship with said dealership and how aggressively the dealer will stick up for you. A 99 certainly "should" be covered...in fact ALL 355's should be covered. But remember, they will fail again...so far, there is no upgraded oem part yet.

Well, you could print out the EPA document and ask FNA why they won't cover the cat ECU's. Worth a try...all they can say is "no". It appears they should be covering them.....

The explanation I was given for FNA not covering the exhaust ECU's sounded almost like a Ferrari clerical omission rather than anything else. Supposedly the manufacturers submit to the EPA/whoever a list of essential emissions-related components. Since the exhaust ECU's were not on that list, they are not required to be covered under warranty.

Note that the covered ECU listed in the weblink posted above most certainly refers to the engine management ECU only.

There is a cost component to what is covered. The list for my truck is one item long. That obviously does not explain the manifolds, you will have to see FNA for that one. Personally I feel if large numbers of people (you guys) complain to the EPA about noncompliance with FED air quality laws (warranty) Ferrari may come up high enough on the radar screen for something to be done.

The ECU's are not covered for most likely the omission reasoning. They are as much a critical part of the emissions system as the cats. I got word today that the cats are covered. The ECU's are most likely a pretty nice profit center for FNA. You can't blaim the dealers on this one. They are following protocol.
I really love this car. Almost as much a a bike. These little oddities are straining our relationship.
