Any one know of a posted step by step procedure for removing the engine in a 355 for a major service?
I’ve tried searching to no avail

    I have a hoist so that’s not a problem.

    Thanks in advance

Complete engine, transaxle and subframe is dropped from below. The car must be raised high enough to slide the complete subframe assembly out.Just had 30K service done on my F355 at Prancing Horse in Burlingame,Ca;and saw how the procedure is done.Takes about 4-5hrs for a highly experienced Ferrari tech top with the right equipment.Trans axle cradle;car hoist;air tools;etc.Planning to do your owm 30k service?

For the last step of actually wheeling the engine out and getting enough clearance, do you think that the rear of a 348 without engine, gearbox, diff, exhaust, suspension, rear bumper, fuel load, coolant, wheels etc. etc. is light enough so that two neighbours could replace the floor jacks for that final lift?

You have to be very careful of the body work with the subframe out. On the 348/355 there is not much supporting the rear of the car and you can "Kink" the rear end easily.

Wow, I'd never even considered that aspect. That's a good tip! I might have fallen into that trap - thanks!

Hmmmmm ........ did we learn this from a "personal" experiance Brian. Next time don't use it as a monkey bar. Hahahaaaa!

Drew, as for the final lift, you don't need any extra hands. Once you have the rear bumper off, the engine will roll right under the cross bar for the heat shields, no problem.

Thanks Ernie, as I said I have a shop with a hoist. I bought the factory shop manuals when I bought the car in 2000, but they came without the A, and B, sections, B is the engine section…… arggh… back ordered, but never came.

Rifledriver, I have a Neusbaum asymmetrical hoist, the front arms are no problem, but where do you put the rear arms so every thing clears when its time to drop the sub frame. It won’t fit using the jack points as the arms are too long, and it I use the rear jack points, and move the fronts forward, it’s too tail heavy. In the past I have used the sub frame in the rear, but of course that is not possible for taking the sub frame out.

    Thanks, Dave

You will want to possition the lift just in front of the were the gas tank is, on the frame of the body. If you look at the outside of the car, it will be just about were the door closes. If you look under the rocker pannel you should see a lip that the rocker pannel butts up to. The lip runs the length of the bottom of the car. Towards the rear of the car the lip doesn't go any farther, right around were I said the door closes, near the gas tank. That part of the frame is almost the balancing point of the car. You can put one floor jack one either side, and just about balance the car with the engine in if you wanted to. Anyway that is were you will want to pull the lift at the rear of the car, right before the lip stops, or in that general area. Be carefull not to put the lift under the metal piece that is under the radiators. The metal CANNOT hold the weight, and it WILL BEND. It can also mess up the bracket that hold the radiator in place, up under the rear fender well. So just be careful, to lift the car on the frame of the body.

    ernie, Rifledriver, and ShanB,

even if this thread wasn't intended for my 348, I've learnt a lot already - thanks guys! ShanB - those pics are superb - my garage door is EXACTLY where yours is and now I can better estimate which way around I can do the job!
