I think I finally got rid of the last one that was hitting me with pop-ups. Even clearing out temp internet files from IE didn't remove everything, but when I went to the directory and cleared out all the suspicious stuff, then I haven't had any problems since. So for 2 days now not a single indication of anything. HijackThis and MS Beta showing all clear.

I am moving to Firefox though.

I'm surprised you haven't done that sooner.

One REALLY important bit of advice I can give is before running any MS Spyware remover / Spybot app etc etc on an XP platform is to turn System Restore off. If you don't do this, then you will continually reinfect yourself with certain spyware / trojan strains.

I'm finding out right now how to fix, but FerrariChat.com doesn't display as cleanly with Firefox as it does with IE. I like it except I do a lot of half url cursor edits with the keyboard and in Firefox half the time it drags the url down to the bar for a quick link.

i just happened to check in my "security zone" settings in IE, and noticed a site had somehow added itself to my "trusted sites". i urge all users to check this and DELETE anything in there that you didn't specifically put in there.

    Tools
    ...Internet Options
    .......Security
    ............Trusted Sites
Click "SITES" and delete anything you didn't put in there.

some other useful stuff that i've come across....

a nice article about stuff: http://computercops.biz/postt7736.html

    a browser security tester (friendly) : http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity

here is a cool one that will block ActiveX of all currently known malicious sites. check this page out: http://www.spywareguide.com/blockfile.php . the "Minimal Download" is a registry file which will disable stuff like that on all the sites listed. be sure you know what you're doing before running it, but i'm quite confident it's safe.

and finally, a program to add a list of thousands of known useless sites to your "Restricted Sites" zone, which stops them from using Cookies, Javascript, Java, ActiveX, etc. https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm - direct link to download....

it might not be obvious what to do with it from there, basically there are a couple REG files that you can run to add all the "crapware" sites to your Restricted Zone. perhaps Rob might add a direct download of the REG file available from fchat so users here can just run it straight from here and trust it.

anyhoo, safe browsing all, the internet's only going to get worse before (if) it gets better, so best you learn this stuff now before you get hijacked, and you probably will.

Saw on the news last night that "porn dialers" are getting really bad. Basically, these wares load on your computer and subscribe you to all these porn services. Later you get a bill in the mail for hundreds of dollars in usage.
