So is Ferrari I believe. My understanding is the F2004m interim car is a F2004 chassis modified to accept the F2005 engine ... but I could be wrong.
I was there last year ... and it was no way as boring as last year. The most exciting thing about the race last year was hoping the wind would blow a grid girls short skirt up a little higher.

Regarding passing ... er, they will never happen on that cr@p track as all corners are fast, thus you have to compromise too much to make an attempt. Stupid track.

Everyone is calling MS's performance boring and poor. However, as commented earlier, a position change of 13-3 and 11-2 were remarkable, but when I got home from work, MS was in 18th and when he got wrecked, wasn't he overtaking 6th place? That's the greatest position change of all.

Regardless of how poor or boring it might have seemed to some, I can not stop watching while Schumi is still driving in hopes of seeing one of his miraculous maneuvers-- he is certainly an inspiring driver.

I may be wrong but Michael had another stop to do while some of the others behind him were done with their stops - meaning Michael would have moved backwards. Besides, what everyone else was harping on was the way he was stuck on 15th position for ages - granted he stopped later than virtually everyone else but he was making many overtaking moves either apart from the usual Jordan, Minardi overtaking.

Well, every day is not Sunday. The only problem being... it was Sunday... in fact it was supposed to be one of the best Sundays of the year. The first race of the season. The time of the year that marks the beginning of spring for me.

    All I had asked for is a Ferrari 1 - 2!!!

I will settle for a Ferrari in 2nd position. Michael had a bad race. I don't blame the poor guy. The weather has worked in his favor so many times. This one time it worked against him. I am sure he will be back to being on top in no time. Untill then I am just going to be happy in the fact that F1 as started. All the BS about winter testing has stopped.

The F2004M is good... The F2005 will be simply incredible. It all about strategy over the entire season.

On to Malaysia and more Ferrari victories in Kuala Lumpur.

The F2004M still has the 053 engine installed in the back of it as the 055 engine will not adapt to the old chassis. Ferrari had to detune the 053 in order to make it last 2 races.

Yes, hopefully Speed will dig out some more "legends" footage, we can watch and enjoy some real racing and just read a race report on this 2005 crap.

i am very 'appy for fisi, who i have supported since '93 when i met him after his f3 victory in monaco. i am also pleased for dc.

but the race was BORING. these new rules make it so that nobody pushes anything hard, just nurses it around trying to not break anything or use up the tires. the pit stops are incredibly boring as well.

and all of these changes to increase lap times by 1.5 seconds? how does all this in any way make the sport more enjoyable, safer, or cheaper? it doesnt imho

I thought it was a good race and bodes well for a great season. While it's a little hard to tell because the wet qualifying shuffled the grid, the field seems much closer than last year. THANK GOD FOR THAT!!!!!! I'm a tifosi, but I've also seen quite enough of one driver dominating the sport. It's no fun that way, I'd much rather see a challenge.

Great job Fisichella!!!! That was a well deserved win for a great guy, and a flawless drive. I would love to see him as a title contender, he's fast, the car is fast, and he seems to be very happy at the team, a great formula for success. Alonso certainly won't be taking this sitting down so we should have a great fight between the two of them this year.

BAR was indeed disappointing. I don't know if any of this can be pinned on Dave Richards leaving, it's only been a few months and much of this year's car was already set in stone by the time he was fired. Still, it is a bit soon to write them off, but they no longer have the 3rd car on Friday to benefit from. And how much of last year's success was their good work, verses the other teams falling back? I expect them to get back on form, but if they don't this is a catastrophe.

Red Bull looks great, and I'm thrilled DC is finding some success late in his career. I don't expect it to all go this well, but what a nice FU to Ford and their bumbling mismanagement of the team.

Toyota - more of the same
Villeneuve - even more of the same
Minardi - I think the final outcome of that ridiculous fuss was that Stoddard has played out whatever sympathy many had for the team.

I'm actually quite pleased with Ferrari's performance, I thought the Bridgestones were going to be at far more of a disadvantage than that. RB's 2nd in the old car is really impressive. New chassis with a new motor should put them right at the front.

    I don't get your reasoning.

With these stupid pitstops for tyres and fuel that we have suffered for way too long the drivers NEVER pushed if there was somebody in front of them ... they just waited for the next pitstop and left the racing to the strategy guys, like Ross Brawn. Ross really won all the races not MS ... MS just implemented the clever strategy, like a very fast (but non-thinking) monkey.

I personally would like to see racing on the track returned and thus NO pitstops unless for punctures or car needs fixing. Some might get off on watching 20 men swarm all over a race car ... I don't, because it just gives the drivers an excuse to not pass anybody on the track.

Think about it: No pitstops means that if you want to win you HAVE to pass on the track, no girly following the car and playing strategy cr@p. This means we return to racing drivers (and thinkers) winning races instead of just fast lappers.

Yes I think MS can actually race on the track (except he couldn't at Melbourne for some reason) but I am sick and tired of watching him just drive around in circles waiting for the next pitstop, etc....

With no pitstops at all, the drivers will have to play strategy themselves to some degree, thus save their tyres and fuel for a final orgasim of racing at the end ... what drama ... just like the old days.

I agree with that for your reasons as well as from an observer's perspective races without pitstops are a lot more obvious. The way it is run right now, you never really know where they're at until the last round of pitstops is over.

Anyway, I think the refuelling might go away altogether eventually. Tire changes and refueling was introduced by Bernie to beef up the show. But without tire changes the current pitstops look more like drive through penalties, ergo no show.

fine. no pitstops then. but then allow them to change tires and engines when they want. because all they are doing at the moment is nursing the car around hoping not to waste the tires or damage the engine. they are not racing one another very often.

at least then we could see some strategy, some daring, some need to push the guy in front. right now half of the race is thinking about the next race, not the one they are sitting in.

and did i mention that the new qualifying rules are also stupid? just bring back 12 laps in 1 hour. simple and exciting.

if mosley thought that having somebody other than ms win a race would magically make it exciting again, he was extremely wrong.

The best set of rules we ever had in F1 was the 2000 season and maybe the 2001 season. Everything beyond that has been absolute junk.

The new qualifying setup is meant to give TV time to idiots such as Minardi. I don't think it is exciting in the least bit. Quite frankly, most people are confused with the new rules. It is too mmuch to take in at one time.

    -new tire regulations
    -new engine regulations
    -new qualifying setup
-new aero package and chasis regulations
    etc. etc.

Might as well tell everyone to bring horses to the next race and stop driving single seater cars.

what we need is the following:
    - qualifying back the way it was at 12 laps in an hour
    - 4 sets of dry tires per race
    - 1 engine per race
    - all aero, engine, and other rules stay the same for the next 5 years.

that way the small guys have time to narrow the gap; nobody is spending too big on new stuff since the old will do just fine; there is steady refinement of the cars over time.

you can pit if you want for new tires. you can try to go the whole race without pitting at all - your call.

keep the whole thing simple and self evident - fast cars with gutsy drivers win - period. dont make it so that everybody has to become a regs expert to know what is going on all the time.

You are correct sir! Sauber is the "mule" for the 055 engine at this time. Which makes me think ol' JV will get his wish for more HP in the future! We will see how many motors detonate at the next race while Sauber and Ferrari (ok and maybe BAR) stroll across the finish line. There are still plenty of unknowns guys! Let's talk again after the next race about a Renault dominated season!

Speaking of JV....and Alonso. If you can't pass, shut up! If you can't pass AND hold your position, REALLY SHUT UP! The guy needs to quit hanging around Moantoya. JV drove a very gamey race with what he had to work with.

MS - Michael will NEVER say a bad thing about the car or the tires. Based on RB's times, MS had to be having some issues. What they were, we will never know. It is so crazy that all the media (and some folks here - for shame!) have already writen him off into retirement. HAR! I want all you chicken$hits to continue to post your drivel all season. That way we can give you your required daily beatings!

    Ross,

I think your dead on. You dont lower costs by changing the rules every year. You dont increase the excitement one bit either just confusion by the fans and playing to the rules by the teams.
