What are the pros and cons of each of these ignition systems?
PermaTune is going through some business issues at the moment. I had a friend who was working on a P turbo when the ignition box crapped out in the shop. I phoned a company here in Canada that deals direct with permatune, and he told me that they are haveing some serious issies with the new owner and old owner of the company. So in a nutshell, for right now nothing is getting done over there as far as ignition boxes. And with this news..I would go with the MSD. Who knows what you'll get now, with Permatune in a big mess!
I just spoke with a permatune tech rep and of course he claimed a permatune system is much better than an MSD one. He also claimed that MSD ignitions are known to burn up coils and distributors and produce low power above 3000rpm. I've already ordered my MSD system, but still want to know which system is best? Has anyone had any problems with MSD systems causing any coil and/or distributor problems? Or noticed reduced RPM power?
MSDs don't burn up the coils or distributors unless you plug them into a wall socket in your garage. Most people that have problems install them wrong, or use it to correct a problem like a weak spark from a bad coil. That's when the coil melts. MSDs may be a little meaner to points, but why would you use a capacative box, and not get rid of your points? I have a used MSD 6a and a bosch blue coil and have no problems.
