I do not follow NCAA, but I want to win the pool! It's winner takes all and here are the rules:

    The rules are:

Sheets need to be in by 11:00 am on Thursday.

1 point for picking 1st round winner

2 points for picking 2nd round winner

4 points for picking 3rd round winner

8 points for picking 4th round winner

16 points for picking 5th round winner

32 points for picking the Champion

If I win, I will split the $$ with the person who I submit the picks from.

    Thanks in advance!

Good thread! Everyone give your advice so we can win our respective office pools. I haven't started my analysis yet, but I usually do pretty well in the pools.

Tip #1: 90% that do the pool don't follow basketball all year. If you have 40+ people in your pool, don't even pick the top 2-4 favorites to win. This year you might see 50% of your pool pick Illinois to win. I make money every 2-3 years by doing 3 brackets and picking 2, 3, or 4 seeds to win. Although usually over a 1 seed.

Tip #2: I need to check on my hommies Kansas for an injury report, but although they are 2nd in the computer rankings, Kansas will be lucky to make Sweet 16 with their top player injured.

More info after I do my analysis, everyone else needs to offer theirs.

Tip #3: I don't like to get crazy with upsets. Usually a straight bracket (just picking the top seed) will score more points than 70% of the brackets out there because everyone likes to pick upsets. However, I tend to be better not going crazy with upsets, just the obvious match-ups that because of injuries or stronger late season play make the higher ranked team an obvious favorite. The goal is to be in that top 30%, but above the straight bracket going into the final weekend. In the long run usually the early rounds don't pick the pool winner, the winner is usually always who nails the Final 4.

Tip #4: Check the Las Vegas odds on games. Usually betting money is smart money or at least better than the selection committee. If anyone has a good link to a Las Vegas odds site, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm still curious to know why the NCAA is starting here in Austin at the end of SXSW. I wonder where anyone will get a hotel to stay overnight.

How big is the pool? This will help you decide how many risks to take. For example, in a giant 1vs the country pickem, go for pitt/pacific over washington if you like. In a pool with 20 people, even if you think one of them can beat washington, they have a good chance of losing first round, while washington is about 99.9% to beat montana. Hope this helps.

It's not a huge dollar amount pool, maybe a Grand. I REALLY want to win it because the group that's in it knows I am a knucklehead when it comes to NCAA and they all welcome having MY money! I would really like to rub their noses with a PeterS win!

Ahh..the big dance....March is a more festive month to me than December..although I wonder why since KU has disappointed us on the championship for YEARS ... I always hold out hope! I've always said I wanted to send out Final Four cards (instead of Christmas cards) hey, basketball is a religion in Kansas...and those of whom we must not speak(DUKE) really are the devils

I had the same thought but had no trouble getting a room for Saturday night (although more than 1/2 the teams/fans will be gone by then).

I'm seeing NC being picked more and more over Illinois, I'm staying away from both schools, I'll never win our 150 entry pool picking those.

We ended up with 122 in our pool, I'm pretty happy with my choices. As predicted, most went with the top couple teams.

    Illinois - 39
    N. Carolina - 35
    Wake Forest - 12
    Duke - 11

My best chance I think is UConn with only 2 others picking it. I have a 2nd bracket with Wake Forest and a 3rd "crazy" one with Kansas, but actually that one is rocking right now because I picked the Milwaukee upset. :)

Good call on Bucknell. Even though my bracket is hurting (I still had Wisconsin beating Kansas), I'd happily forfeit my $10 to see Bill $elf sweat that rug off of his head.
