I needed to repair and exhaust leak on both sides of the cats and used these. They were a perfect fit ( the smaller, not pictured was a tad tight but not too bad). Layered metal with a fibery substance (asbestos?) Advance Auto Part # 85000 (large 2" id) " 85009 (small 1.750" id) Lost the receipt but I believe $ 1.98 @ or so. Car had an annoying back firing during hard decelleration that is now completely gone. This was a fast, easy and cheap fix. On a bad note, after working like a mad man to rebuild the whole air injection system on the car I removed the cats only to find them gutted by PO. May redo the exhaust system using after market cats. No wonder I could not pass the emission test in Northern Virginia. I also made and installed a "coolant recovery tank" as someone else had done here previously. It 16 oz. and I can run a bit more coolant in the expansion tank without pissing out of the back. Also the system is now always under water, no more air sucked back in. Have to still make a flange for the top. Next week I will anodize it ( have to decide on color, if any)
Thanks for posting those part numbers. I know DJ Parks did that recovery tank on his 308 in a similar fashion to yours. Its something I should do to, since even after replacing my leaky water pump, flushing the coolant, bleeding the system, I've got that dumping coolant-syndrome again. I normally wouldn't be too bothered by it, but everytime I drive the car, I get at least one comment from someone driving beside me, or in a parking lot: "hey buddy, you have some fluid coming out of the back of your car...".
I wish I would have known about this source a little earlier. If memory serves, I paid almost $80 for four of those exhaust gaskets through the dealership not more than a few months ago....go figure. Anyway, glad to see you posted a good alternative resouce to the dealership for future purchases.
So we must not have been the two that discussed this a week or 2 ago, but it sounds like the 348 uses a different shape donut than the 308 that may not be available in the wider market. :| Maybe it'll take longer till 348s can be bought by cheapskates like me and then we'll find the cheap solution!
I fully well know... I just found out yesterday but I think this may put an end the expensive donut issue. I am sure that there is a better fitting smaller donut. I did not clean the pipe very well and it still did fit, however. I also was able to have the donuts fitted by a Midas shop. They had the same large one (fiber/metal) but did not have the smaller. They did sell me,. however, a set (small and large) of perfect solid steel ones. Since I do not know how to use the steel ones (should they have some compoung on it?) I used the fiber ones. The tech at Midas told me that the steel ones will not crush or compress.
This looks like a good inexpensive source for another "standard part" I want to remove the silencer bix on my 328 for repair, so would like to get a set of gaskets ready. Anyone know the size used on a 328 exhaust ?? (pipe joints at the box)
Thanks for the info--it's always great to get part #'s on workable aftermarket parts for these beasts. By the way, where did you get the recovery tank? I think that that's a great idea.
The big question is- how to remove the old donuts? I replaced two of them and it took about an hour apiece just to get all the peices off of the end of the pipes. The original donuts are made with some type of metal/fiber combination, and after twenty years- they seemed to have become ONE with the pipe/flange. Any tricks anyone has come up with to remove these old donuts??
I made it. I like to do machine work for my car. I just listed one on ebay. (need to sell something, sometimes, to keep my hobbies going).
Mine wer mummified on the pipes but a gentle working with an air hammer took them off (in pieces) without damage to the pipes. Air hammer from Harbor Freight maybe $ 15.00 but must have a compressor.
old doughnuts = hacksaw. I found my doughnuts from an exhaust shop, just showed them the old ones.....
Gianluca helped me out with the part numbers for these a couple months ago and I went to Auto Zone and picked them up cheap. So here is a picture of them for everyone else. Thanks again Gianluca! -Jesse FYI...when asking the clerk at Auto Zone for these, be sure to give him the SKU REF # NOT the 85000/85009 # Image Unavailable, Please Login
A couple of '78 308 x-over part numbers from an old thread... Fel Pro 8194 and NEA EX-1 are exhaust donuts
I think those are Fel Pro gaskets sold thru Auto Zone because the SKU REF # is 8194 on the 2" gasket.
