Why do we worry about resale?

Guys! PLEASE stop all this nonsense!

You need to trailer these cars and coddle them and diaper them and keep them perfect for us bottom-feeding-secondary-market-guys!!

 

Alright! I'm getting gas later, I've called for a trailer to take me 1 mile to the gas station and back. It seems like a lot of work, but if it's how I'm supposed to take car of my car, then okay. To amortize the cost of the trailer I'm having the driver take me through the drive thru at In n Out.

Drive, enjoy but drive! And a further bonus: you give pleasure to other drivers, the sight of a Ferrari is worth at least a smile, a moment of daydreaming, a brief respite from the humdrum traffic.

 

Why would anyone pay this much for this kind of vehicle without wanting to drive it as much as possilble?

 

Spot on! This is where I ended up too. Similarly, you can make more on a mild up day than the next 5 years of depreciation. Agonising over depreciation is a distraction I can't afford.

Just like that stock or mutual fund or vacation home you worry too much about?

I'm a big believer that cars are for driving, not for keeping in the garage and never driving for fear it might lose value. I've owned a number of older Jaguars, and have two XKE's right now. I drive them. I bought the '84 Mondial last summer to drive it. It had only 19K miles on it when I bought it. Now it has 22K and I intend to drive it as much as possible this year. That's what they are for. Having fun. I take good care of my cars, I don't beat them to death, but I drive and enjoy them.

 

Depreciation? I can afford a Ferrari because I _don't_ pay depreciation on cars (generally). My daily driver is 12 years old; my wife's is 15. Neither is depreciating on its own...just the wear, tear, and the miles hurt the value.

I admire you guys that buy new cars and are willing to take the hit (whether it be a Ferrari or whatever)... because without you my plan wouldn't work very well! ;-)

Of course, in exchange, I put up with older technology, less reliability (though something tells me a 20 year old Mercedes would be about as reliable as a new one...), etc. But I can live with that.

About the only thing I own that's depreciating is my truck (only 6 years old) that I use to drag the old cars home when they break (and of course to move my track car around...) ;-)

Maybe Ferrari owners have finally come to their senses and will soon come out of hiding and start enjoying the twisties like there's no tomorrow!

I'm not holding my breath, though.

In all my years of enjoying the back roads in various sports cars (these days a 360), I have yet to come across another Ferrari in the wild. But I do get to wave to lots of smiling Porsche, Corvette, NSX and, occasionally, Lambo enthusiasts. Even when it's raining.

(fwiw, my handy definition of "the wild" is any back road where the closest Starbucks is more than 15 minutes away. )

 

As a 456GT owner, I understand deprecaition, but you know what I' don't care. I bought this 2+2 with my eyes wide open and against the advise of a friend who pleaded I buy a 355. To me the 456 is exactly what I wanted and I never viewed it as an investment. For what it is worth, my 456 is most likely worth more today than the .dot com stocks I would have most likely bought in 2000, thinking they would be a 10 bagger

I've owned this car for 5 years, can't wait for sunny weekends just to take it out for a spin and plan to keep it as long as I'm able to justify the toy.

Yeah right. If your cousin can even contemplate driving his 512 TR as an experience that he could get used to....the car should be confiscated and he whipped with wet pasta noodles.

I drove my "lowly Mondial (TM)" every day for 4 years and I would still look forward to trips to Shoprite to pick up a loaf of bread. Boring? .....yeah right.

The only owners who should be concerned with resale values are the ones who are capable of writing off their vehicle at taxpayer expense (boo, hiss)...

 

IMO, there are only three times when a person should think about resale value:

1) When you buy it. If you can, don't overpay for what you are getting.

2) If you are going to restore it, or do something like a $20k paint job on a 308. If that's what makes you happy, do it, but understand what you are doing.

3) When you sell it.

Otherwise, drive it and have fun! I don't understand people who don't drive there cars because they are worried about depreciation.

 

I Used to worry about Resale when I was younger. Now,when I get a Car,I buy it for ME to enjoy. Sure,I take great care of all of my Cars. But,to worry about keeping it "Perfect" for the "Next Guy"...? Forget it!

I had an old Aunt,years ago,(gone now) That used to put Plastic Covers on their Furniture. Same thing! You are gonna sit on uncomfortable,Sticky plastic covers for the whole time....JUST to keep it nice for the next person? No Way!!! You bought it for Yourself...Now ENJOY IT!!!! (But,take care of it)

 

Same here. Just ran 400 miles today, back roads, no other exotics--if you don't drive it, how do you enjoy it? (Otherwise, I would just get a stamp or coin collection). Many near deserted two lanes, some mile+ straights (never had it over 170). Other days have been more twisties, less miles, still on the back roads where the cops and other drivers are sparse. If you don't do the miles, you can't do the thrill. How does anyone get really good with a 6 speed if they only put a few miles on their car?

Most likely it is related to resale that there are so few posts on actually driving on roads where you can run it like it's meant to be run. I remember posting a comment once seconding someone stating that "real F. drivers" are found out on the backroads. The thread took a different direction, no one else had anything to say about actually driving their car. Might be grounds for a poll.

 

I bought (3) 360 in 04. Lost big on a 2000, traded my 04 coupe on a 05 spider, lost agin. My 05 spider has been in the shop longer than i have owned it. I shiped the spider to Orlando from Chicago today so i can drive to Key West for the first week of April, because I can't stand not driving it. I have not made good $$ dissions concerning Ferrari, but who cares? If you got it, spend it, then drive the damm thing. It does no good to sit and look at it or worry about the $$$. If have to worry about the $$$$ then simply don't buy one.

If i own it, then it WILL have to function as a semi-daily driver. There WILL be rock chips, bugs in the radiator, pine needles and canyon cheese in every little nook and cranny in every little intake, cracked and scraped spoilers, plumbing tools in the trunk, houseplants and groceries and the odd 2x4 from Home Depot in the passenger's compartment etc etc. I even drove the Countach in the rain last weekend.

Office buildings, strip malls and residental rentals; THOSE are investments. Anything with 4 wheels is just one more perk from owning and managing the investments.
