348 Deprecation

Okay, gotta chime in on this...remember, low production numbers do not qualify for "collectibility" or desirability...they didn't make many 400i's either, you know? Not that a 348 is anywhere in that league, but one must admit, that 348's are still frowned upon by many (rightfully or not) and that affects demand, and ultimately selling prices.

And don't think for a minute that all the 348's coming on the market are "sorted"...eeh gads! There are PLENTY of unsorted Ferraris of all models out there that have not been straightened out....I mean come on...328's are older, and even they are not all "sorted" yet...I've seen them. That is entirely up to the owner, and their are plenty of owners with lower standards than ours.

That said, I STILL think the 348 is a great car, and probably much more dependable than the 355. Though the 355 can spank it silly. What is most telling, is there are never that many 348's on the market...owners seem to hang on to them. Gotta be a good reason for that.

Hey...I DID buy my 348 as an investment, right along with Shelly my prize coon dog. My 348 so far has delivered handsome returns - lots of smiles, oohs, and ahhhs. Same for my coon dog. So whatcha want to make of it?

 

the 365 gtc/4 is also a perfect example of this, only 500 made.

 

if you buy a 348 - go for a spider ! low production numbers (1090 made) and ferrari spiders are always highly appreciated. compare prices of 250 PF coupes with 250 PF convertibles or 330 GTC with GTS. there is always a big difference. and - very important - a spider is much more fun to drive an a warm day in spring or summer.

Ummmm. How do I say this...this isn't the classifieds section. It's rude to hijack a legitimate thread for your own selfish devices. The author of the thread isn't soliciting emails of all of our 348's.

 

whats with the seat covers?

 

I just took delivery of a '94 348 Spider and am having a great time with it. Its a delightful car and I agree with the post that the convertibles of '94 and '95 represent the best buys of the genre.

In terms of depreciation, I think its so much a function of mileage and maintenance that to ask how much your car will depreciate is almost an impossibility for someone to answer. Do you intend to drive it 100 or 10000 miles per year? Do you plan to follow all maintenance suggestions at factory authorized dealers? The variables here will weigh heavily into what you car will be 'worth' -- or perhaps more accurately -- what you could hope to sell it for -- in two or three years (or whenever).

If I were to hazard a guess, I would think that a standard 1994 or 1995 coupe that is a desirable color combination and is well maintained (cosmetically and mechanically) could reasonably be expected to be worth at least $40-45k over the next severall years -- unless the mileage is really high (over 100k). A convertible would be worth $5-10k more. Again, just my speculation.

I can tell you this though: it really is a rewarding car to drive. The looks definitely grow on you and it looks much better in person than in photos. I've even grown to appreciate the wheels and the tailight grille if you could believe it. They "fit" the car well.

thanks! it really is lovely. everyone who sees it is pretty awestruck. the interior bits are a little gummed up, but i just ordered all new carbon fiber stuff (including door sills) from www.ryalexdesign.com We'll see how things turn out in a few weeks. i'll post more pics then.

i just replaced the glove box "hood shock" today. it is the size of a thing of lip balm and is the smallest pressurized 'strut' i've ever seen. only $67 from my local dealer!

well, at least i saved on the labor since it was DIY. just hooked up a trickle charger as well.

What did 348 coupes sell for new (base MSRP)?

 

The more I look at all these 308/328 cars, the more I am convinced they should be treated as distincly different cars, as well as the 308 line itself. The carb 308 is totally different from the later i models, and the QV different still. And the 328 is so much different thats its actually a totally different car. I bought a 77 308 over any other 308 because its what I wanted. Before I would move into a QV or a 328, I would jump to the 348, or jump backwards to some earlier V-12 model. But thats just me.

I'd want to say they're dreaming. Not to say that it isn't a value that a car of that quality could realize in the future at some point, but it seems that the selling market is wrought with dealer listings that sit for quite some time after acquiring from the owners and tagging with an optimistic $10-20k bump. Other auctions also repeatedly bidding up far short of a reserve or BIN before expiration and re-list. I'm wondering if it is the dealer application of a formula for what is/had been happening with other frothy cars in the market, but the 348 may just not be quite at right now.

 

I'd say they're dreaming but that is a nice example of an early 348. The only way to maintain the value of this car is to not drive it, which is a crime for a 348, IMO.

 

Meh... Screw this conversation. I'm happily driving my 90' TS that I've had for almost 10 years to the "Italian Car Fest" tomorrow. Not in the show this year, but always a good time. Love the cars! Drive them like you stole them, no?

 

A bargain car, it's just the punters haven't realised it yet.

Tempting to buy another, for parts if not for use, before the car loving masses catch on.

5 years ago RHD 348 TB's & TS' were selling for £18K~£23K and had been for the best part of a decade.

Then a couple of years ago they started to move upwards to £22K~£25K.

Last May you needed @ £28K~£33K to get yourself a RHD 348 (I know this to be true because I bought My 1990 348 TS from a very well known Ferrari Specialist for £33K last May, when all the £28K, £30K, £32K cars were sold already when I rang up about them!).

12 months down the road, I've just been offered £50K for My car (and there would be @ £5K+ of dealers commission on top that the buyer would have to pay, so that makes it a £55K+ car).

Today, if you're in the market for a RHD 348 TB/TS then you're going to need @ £59K~£70K!

Wow! - Must be nice to have that sort of spare cash available!

LHD 348's in the UK are currently on the market in abundance for £33K~£60K (and basically are not selling! The 348 market started to move upwards, and as there were very few RHD's available [i.e. none!], suddenly every sports car dealer raced over to the continent to grab cheap LHD 348's. What they all failed to realise is that hardly anyone in the UK really wants a LHD and so these cars are staying on the market for months on end).

RHD's that used to be two a penny in the UK car market are now few and far between.

A RHD 348 TB with 40K miles on the clock recently sold for @£40K (a relative bargain at the moment), and 348 TS with similar mileage has sold for £52K.

As I say, the RHD 348 TB's/TS' that are for sale right now are priced @ £59K~£70K - Hardly the price of a parts car!

At the moment in the UK the RHD market is riding pretty high (and may actually have topped out). IMO, Anyone looking to buy a RHD as some sort of investment now has missed the boat!

You say the "punters" and " car loving masses" haven't caught on to the 348 yet? - Based on the RHD 348 market over the last 3 years, I'd say you couldn't be further from the truth!

 

Just had an agreed insurance value on my 1994 GTB for £71,000.
