    Dear knowledgable forum:

Being a huge Ferrari nut I have browsed around these great forums for a while now and every time I see the term "F-car" I can't figure out the origin of this abbreviation. F-car, L-car, P-car..?? Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche.
I thought it was obvious that we are talking about cars? Also it's not much of an abbreviation as you save 2 keystrokes typing "F-car" instead of "Ferrari"

Anyway - not a flame just curious (and bored at work! haha)

I don't quite get it either. Now I do have an RX-7, 240Z & MX-5. In Europe, that says it all.

Same reason the mafia doesn't call itself the mafia. "This thing of ours" takes alot longer to say, but is so much more cryptic to those who aren't "in."

Every group, or industry, has their own slang. It's often not about efficiency of communication, but more of a bonding thing.

I think it's just because, somethimes it's easier and faster to write: F-car, L-car, P-car... then Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and on top of that it's the way you won't get any flak from spelling nazis. :D

It's an elitist thing. Slang is just a way for one group of people to make themselves feel and appear exclusive. I prefer to use "Ferrari". It's more.......old school. Just like me. :)

I guess that writing "Ferrari" starts to be redundant...hence, F-car! BTW, In our household, we no longer say "Ferrari" when referring to my 308, but rather: "The Red Car."

Personally hate this abbreviation. It says either you can't spell or can't be arsed to type.

    LOL.

I think to mitigate sounding pompous or like a braggart when talking about one's own car, especially with the social impact the word "Ferrari" has. You can say Fcar and it's a little less charged with meaning rather than "my Ferrari this... My Ferrari that."
