That is why it has become part of my lexicon. I can freely use it without fear of raising eye brows.

You will never catch me using the term "F-car" in print or speech. Insider slang or not, I find it very irritating.

I refer to my car as my Ferrari or my 330, my wife and I call it "the Ferrari", along with "the Mercury" and "the SUV".

I never saw the term "F-car" to refer to Ferrari in the 60's. I guess it's just an outgrowth of today's technobabble.

I simply refer to any car I'm driving as, "My car." I prefer to be low key. I'm not one to go out of my way to be noticed, like some others do.

Concur there. Given the reactions I've gotten lately, I refer to my 328 as "the other Italian".

I can mention the Alfa by name, because a surprising number of people around here have never heard of an Alfa Romeo.

    It's depressing, actually.

That explains the loud pipes and terminal velocity runs in parking garages!

    Actually, I avoid this completely.

    I don't own an F car.

    I own a Dino.

Both of my "F cars" were made after the sell out. I want to call them Ferraris, but they really are nothing more than tarted up Fiats. The F leaves the unknowing masses thinking you have a real Ferrari...

Funny, I also refer to mine sometimes as "The Red Car"! (Good thing my Honda is blue!)

Exactly my point.. we're not sending phone messages here! Anyway.. like I said I really don't care if you type f-car, ferrari, fruitcake, ffjbn2#j or whatever.. I just wanted to know how the x-car thing evolved and why it has become so widely used on the forum and other forums; it's been interesting to see some people on here have such strong opinions which is what makes people interesting.

I think Chrysler started it with the K-car. ;)
Or maybe it goes back to the "C-type". :p

While it's not really important - I do sometimes refer to my Ferrari as an F car. It probably does sound a little less prententious than Ferrari does, plus as noted, other people do call cars P and L cars so it's not like we are alone. I suppose I got in the habit with my 240Z and now my 350Z which have always been refered to Z cars - even when they were ZX's.

Ditto, especially when around non-F-car folks.
