Here's why I ask: Wife sent me to Wal-Mart tonight. While loading the car a primered up POS pulls in the spot next to me. It is obvious that this mother and daughter don't have two nickels to rub together, but what were they both enjoying? Of course, cancer sticks. For some reason I happen to notice both of the tiny orange glows through the milky film in their windows, and make a mental note that the daughter looks very young, at most nineteen. Sad. But it gets better. She opens the door next to me, flicks out her spent cig and climbs out while lighting another...and is at least eight months pregnant. It is probably none of my business, but for some reason it made me angry to see this young woman making such poor choices. It made me even more irritated to think that taxpayers will probably end up paying for the healthcare of the mother, daughter, and this unfortunate little soul as well. Why would anybody do this??? Just my annoyed $.02.
Wow, some people are supremely stupid. This should be a crime. You can't smoke in a bar in NYC with a full ventilation/air cleaning system, yet this person can smoke away while 8 months pregnant. Horrible
If I'm not mistaken, dosn't smoking while pregnant cause birth defects? Or is that just drinking? I never botherd to read the carton, because I dont smoke. Just horrible either way.
You're right, you can bet the taxpayer is paying for it all. Unless she does have a defective child ( caused by the smoking) and then the OB doc will pay for it.
??? Upon your request, I thought we had settled this on dysfunctionalchat. PM me is you wish to discuss this further.
Truer words have not been spoken. And yes, I do consider it child abuse- same as when parents smoke in the car with the kids present. hack, cough. Nick
It makes me sick. I was in Reno, and saw a woman about 9 months pregnant in a casino, smoking and drinking. Some people shouldn't exist.
What's almost as bad are the lowlife, welfare moms in their cars smoking with their infants in the back seat (Sometimes they even have a car seat for the kid!).
In smaller towns, it is all you've got after 6 pm. I've been in there after midnight, and you see people with their kids on a school night. I bet they learned effectively the next day. Of course those are probably also the ones you always see if you happen to go in at lunch. Home Skooled, of course. Wally World is the great equalizer, whether you are a recluse who only comes to civilization once a year, or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, everyone eventually goes into Wal-Mart. Just a reminder to anyone. It is the first of the month tomorrow, so it will be a WELFARE WEEKEND. Better get your GPC cigarattes and Old Milwaukee before they sell out Saturday.
I too live in 'Hooterville'. You should see the Indian casino on Walfare weekend! No wonder why crime is up between the 3rd and the 5th of the month when they are all broke!
Dude, i think you're overreacting... Both of my parents smoked before, during and after my conception and look how i turned out...
A couple years ago I found out that my mother smoked occasionally while pregnant with me. I won't say the names I called her, but I'll just say they weren't nice. I'll never forgive her for it or look at her the same again.
No, but I do know that I wasn't breathing when I was born, and I did have health problems when I was younger. I can't help but think it had something to do with it. Also, with the way my mother smokes, I'd taken "occasionally" to mean half a pack a day or more.
Not that i'm some sort of bleeding heart mother avenger, but did you ever make a mistake that effected your mother...? Something you said or did that was pretty heinous...? Aside from ingesting thousands of poisonous and lethal chemicals on an almost daily basis while you were in her womb and surviving on her very physical existence, was she a good mother...?
My wife is a Child physiologist. She has had to deal many times with kids that have physical and mental disabilities that have stemmed from their mothers habits during pregnancy, not specifically smoking. Drinking, substance abuse and even stress all play vital roles in the development of a baby in the womb. Smoking WILL affect a babys health when they are born. That is a fact. The magnitude of the effect is minimal and variable as well. The amount of times per day she smoked, the strength of the smokes, and what else she was doing on top of the smoking greatly plays into account. Basically, if a mother did smoke a few a day, and didnt do any other activities that would put the baby at risk, then the effect on the baby is fractional. Not even noticeable. Combine it with drinking and it worsens. Combine with stress, and its worse again. Drug abuse sends it through the roof . All studies that have been taken out on this issue, have compared babies from 1000s of mothers. Mothers that fall into any number of categories are studied. Ones that are clean. Ones that smoke a few a day. Ones that smoke a pack a day. Ones that combine other risks. The list goes on. So its not a question really of whether or not your Mother smoked during pregnancy, but more what ELSE was she doing?
Nah. I didn't start smoking until I was 5. I was pushing heroin and drinking a 5th of whiskey during recess by the time I was 6. I had all the latest hotwheels and stompers!
