Since the Pilote and Englebert tires are no longer available, what would make a good substitute? Coker has these Excelsior tires. Has anyone heard anything about them? Thanks. john
Assuming 6.00 x 16 size, suggest traditional Dunlop vintage cross-ply racing tires appropriate to 1950's, or the newly designed vintage tires advertised by Blockley Tyre in the UK, specifically to fill the Englebert void, with 6.00 x 16 size available, or Pirelli Cinturato reproduction. None of these, however, are inexpensive.
Thanks. The Blockley tires are the ones to get I think, but have to wait till there is a distributorship in the US. I would think shipping and customs would make it quite expensive. The tires themselves are expensive as is. Anyone know if there is a dealer here? Cinturatos are ugly and too low of profile. The Dunlop R5 tires are really not for road use. Poor longevity, soft sides and I heard they are not good in the rain. I have Avon Turbosteel now. I suppose I can always go back to these. Coker, however, has an Excelsior line. Look here: http://www.coker.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=18294&cat=362&page=2 The Pilote X, as Art mentioned, I do not think are available anymore. Correct me if I am wrong. They became extinct along with the Englebert. john
Thanks. I called RK. How about $370 per tire, plus tubes, mounting, tax, etc. But they have just the right look though. john Image Unavailable, Please Login
John Have you gotten them installed, yet??? How are they?? Heard they are an excellent solution?? Please report back
Tom, I haven't taken the plunge yet. Don't you think the Coker tire tread looks more like the original Englebert? These are only $250 a piece. They are also V rated. john Image Unavailable, Please Login
John, It may be splitting hairs, but my vote is for the Blockley Tyres, they look right somehow. Good Luck, Art S.
I'm going to use them on the Historic Targa Florio. Will report back. What car are you using them on?
I actually care more about the apperance. I would buy the ones that looked the best. That being the case, Blockley and Dunlop R5 rate higher that the Excelsior. Although Excelsior at $250 tends to make the most sense. And I would bet that Excelsior will last longer than either of the other two. john
I think you've summed it up. The only thing I'm thinking is that somehow Dunlop's might look the best as Ferrari did use Dunlops at various times and as Engleberts are no longer available they would perhaps seem the next best choice but I think all 3 choices are fine. Best
John, I experienced the Blockley tires on a Bugatti T.35B and an Hispano H6B: there is just NO competition with every brand I used before, and I tried quite a few. They are so good that you can feel extra stress on braking/ chassis under hard conditions. They are designed by Julian Majzub, a racing car collector and driver in the UK, who was never happy with available production. So he designed his own tires. He get helped from very good professionals and is producing these fantastic tires. Profit doesn't seem to be an issue, and these tires mostly sold from mouth to mouth. I don't think production is on a big level. The X-Pilot Michelin and the Pirelli Cinturato were the best designed road-tire for the 250 PF coupe, but are almost not available anymore. My choice would be: Avon turbo-speed for quiet/ road usage and Blockley for club/ rallye usage. Hope it helps. Patrick
I've used the Dunlop R5 and Michelin tyres on my 59 CA Spyder. Both work fine and look fine. Yes, the R5 is supposed to be a racing tyre, but I've been using R5s and R6s for years on the street and have yet to have a problem. Ditto the various Michelin X (when I'm stuck with the 400mm size) and Pilote X. I haven't tried the Pirelli, but have heard it is a heck of a tyre for the track. Steve
