Just got a call today, dealer wants me to come in and select options for July/Aug delivery M5. I am number 6 on the list and their first delivery is expected to be 8 cars.

We don't get to pick options until Sept/Oct, for Dec delivery; I'm number 7...

My father has a #1 or #2 spot at our preferred dealership. I'm guessing a Sept./Oct. build with a December delivery. I'm tempted to have him consider delaying it because the US market will be getting a stickshift option within the first year.

I too am on the list for a new M5 to replace my current e39 M5. However, I'm not sure I want it without a stick-shift. FYI, the new M5 will come with SMG only. However, I did hear that because all the backlash from not offering a stick-shift that BMW is considering offering it for 2007. We can only hope!

I'm still not sure that I want to take delivery of the car. At this stage my thoughts are to sell the car and see if I can make a profit on an early delivery slot.
I'm not a fan of the nw M5, It is butt ugly and I really don't like SMG. My wife has an '04 M3 with SMG and I really don't enjoy driving it at all. My daily drivers at the moment are the 550, which I am now also using for regular track days and an '04 MB S600. I don't see how the M5 is going to be a better daily driver than the MB and at around 1850Kg makes the 550 seem like a lightweight, so it would be no good for track days either. It seems like a great solution for a one car owner, if that makes sense.
I still reserve the right to change my mind at anytime between now and delivery though!

This should kick E39 M5 prices down nicely, sweet!

new M5 wont come in stickshift
    1. it is seven speed... haven't hear of ne stickshift seven speeds out there
    2. they gears are set up for the quickest shifts and so it isn't like a conventional gearbox set up
theres a pic out there somewhere that shows what it wud look like if it were a stickshift.... it wuz crazy...
so unless they are planning to swap the entire transmission for this model
SMG is the only way to go

When you pre-order, do you pay list price or what?

That's why they put in a *gasp* different gearbox!

    Some people's logic astounds me...

Sounds like, in your case, a flip is in order.

In my situation, you have to put $1000 down when you order, then a non-refundable $5000 down when you pick colors and only pay the balance when the car is delivered...
