Who are the guys with the long beards? I didn't think you could grow beards like that in the military.

Good question. I'm thinking SEALs, Delta, or CIA.

CIA and other SF troops in Afghanistan during early Operation Enduring Freedom. Between Sept 11, 2001 and April 2002. Were ordered to shave the beards off in uniform. They were learning how to ride for various missions needed and still are out there. God bless them.

Those are some of the best pictures i have ever seen... I have a question though. What are those pictures of planes with like a huge white cloud in back of them, like a spaceship or something?

I don't have time to dig it up right now but it has been discussed in depth previously. It's just a big vapor cloud, often seen around trans-sonic aircraft in humid conditions.

These aren't exactly amazing but here are a few interesting things I saw last weekend....

Actually I am pretty sure that happens at the exact moment when the aircraft surpasses the speed of sound. Could be wrong, but I don't think I am...

Here is an old thread on the subject, remember that threads start at the bottom on the old board:

How many people have gone Mach 2?

I'd disagree, midair refueling is always amazing to me.

Yea, as mentioned the white cloud is what happens when a plane breaks the sound barrier (ie. sonic boom).

As for the guys w/ beards, word on the street is they are Australian military.

The white cloud is not necessarily about sonic or trans-sonic speeds but is to do with the rapid pressure changes due to rapid movement of the aircraft at high speed, when this occurs the moisture separates and becomes visible hence the "cloud" affect.

Awsome pictures. I think the bearded dudes are Green Berets. They are the ones who work with the locals and try to blend in as much as possible.

All our Military are in Uniform. The only Aussie guys that are not are in the SAS and you would not be seeing a picture of them, let me tell you. Their faces would be blurred....

What Dave says is correct although the high speed part is debatable as I could get this effect in a T-37 and that is certainly not high speed. It is associated with rapid pressure change of the still air the airplane is going through and is more common in a high humidity environment.
