What a gorgeous day. Typically hot for Fontana, but some incredible sights, smells, and sounds! I got there around 8:30 and missed the morning session of the Historic drum brake group and Challenge cars while I walked around and tried to figure out the best photo spots.
Gates open at 8. Everybody parks in the infield. If you come in off of Cherry you have to go to the other end of the lot to get to the tunnel. Ticket booth on the left, right across from the tunnel entrance.
I don't know if tomorrow and Sunday will be the same as today, but you could walk practically anywhere you wanted to today. The Challenge and historic cars have the north half of the infield and the Grand Am and Rolex cars have the garages on the South side.
The only spectator areas seem to be the boxes above the pits and a grandstand at the Northeast end of the infield. There is also a viewing area between the two straights in the infield section. Not a lot of photo fence holes for everyone to share but I got lucky today and was able to stay on the bridge. I don't think you'll be able to stay up there Sat/Sun.
I ended up taking 400 pics today. Mostly to test things out, but here are some highlights. Enjoy and hope to see some of you tomorrow and Sunday.

Very nice Frank! Not a bad subject to test out new equipment on... It sounds like parking lots open at 7am and gates open at 8? Were they strict about bag sizes? I have a photo backpack that is about 19 inches tall (not at all huge). I'm not sure what they'll say about a monopod either...

Dave, They never once looked at my bags. You drive in and they stub your ticket at the tunnel entrance then you park and walk around. The only place I can imagine they would check is at the arch gate near the garage area, but nobody was there at 8:30. I had a small camera bag but I saw people with pretty hefty backpacks all over the place. BTW-the last few shots were taken at the far end of the parking lot near the tunnel exit. This is the lefthand side of the Maserati Drive lot. I took those through the chainlink fence with a 50mm. That's how close you are. The earlier shots I took from the bridge of the tail ends of the historic cars at the end of the straight are that turn. The later shots were taken from just out of the left edge of the frame.

Jay, I wish I had your invite for the Maserati drive. I walked over to see the gold 612 and red F430 and one of the guys said, "we aren't open til 11 and you need an invitation to participate." I told him I already rode in a 612 and had decided it wasn't right for me. ;)
