Respectfully, I wonder if Enzo & the Pope ever crossed paths. Italy ain’t that big & many Ferraris are a 20th century equivalent to Michelangelo’s works in sculpture, IMHO. David = 250 GTO, yeah.

    I heard differently.
In Italy, a slight chance perhaps tiny bit maybe, but not in the rest of the world.

There was a thread on that awhile back...the Pope visited the Ferrari factory not long before Enzo's death..I don't remember whether they met or not.

I was following the coverage on the Pope on CNN last night -- they were talking about what an outdoor sportsman he was when younger...he probably had an eye for cars.

I think they knew eachother, but if my memory is OK, i think enzo was too ill to met the pope on his last visit (when the pope visited Maranello in 1988) and stayed at home in his room.....

Although he did visit the factory in 88, all Enzo & the Pope did was have a 5 minute exchange over the phone. The Old Man was too ill to recieve anyone.

Keep in mind that you're looking at a much younger...AND healthier Pope, far removed from the decrepit old man of today.

Aside from the visit of the Pope at the factory, the current F1 team visited the Pope just recently and gave him a model of one of their F1 cars.

On a personal note: I was in St. Peters and saw the Pope a few feet away just one month before the assasination attempt. At that time the Popemobile was wide open, no bullet resisting glass etc.

    Yes. Truly a great man.
He was respected even by people who disagreed with him.

    Ditto that.

I'm not catholic, but it was an impressive moment to have seen him in person.

I saw the Pope in the summer of '79, during his weekly audience in St. Peter's Square. And since my father is Polish and kept ties with an order of priests in Rome, we got VIP seats. For a (at the time) 13 year old, the whole aura of this event was quite impressive.

FWIW, during his visit in Montreal in the 80's, the Olympic Stadium was filled to capacity. The only other time this happened since then, was when U2 played there.

They've painted black noses on the cars in Bahrain in mourning for the Pope's passing.

One wonders if the next Pope will be, once again, Italian.

The next 'Pope-Mobile' should be a stretch 360. That would show a lot of class. Maybe all of the lawsuits against the church will keep the Vatican in a lesser priced type car though.
