I was thinking about buying an F1 or Ferrari/endurance racing games for my computer. I want something realistic that features real F1 teams or road racing cars featuring Ferraris, Porsches, etc. So what are the best games out there? Thanks in advance for your advice.

When it comes to F1 there is only one realistic game available for PC: F1 Challenge 99-02 from EA. http://www.easports.com/games/f12004/pccd.jsp

The good thing about that game is that it is very easy to make mods to, which have meant that there are a plethora of mods for different kind of racing series. GTR, ALMS, Porsche cup, ETCC and even a mod for american muscle cars from the sixties and seventies.

The only really big flaw with F1C is it's support for multiplayer. Realistically you can only be about 10 players online at the same time without lots of lag and other problems.

The same game engine was used by another company to make a game with only GTR cars. It is usually considered to be the best car simulator available on the market today. You can find it here: http://www.10tacle.com/gtr-game/

Both games are based on a game engine from american game company ISI. They are currently developing their own game, rFactor, on a much more refined version of that engine. You can download their multiplayer test version here: http://www.rfactor.net/

As good as these games are nothing comes close to Grand Prix Legends for realism, learning car control & realistic drifts.

GPL also has over 250 add-on tracks that can be downloaded. They range from poor to better than what was included in the game.

I got the impression that he wanted a modern F1 game, and even though I used to be a real GPL fanatic(-45 at GPL-Rank), I have to politely disagree. GPL is a marvellous sim when you consider that it was released in 1998 but it shows it age in sveral aspects. It still deserves to be on any serious sim-racers disk though. I really recommend downloading the rFactor beta to get a glimpse of what a modern sim is gonna be like. I expect that to be the the undisputed champion in the same way GPL was for many years. Unless of course if the old papyrus gang comes up with something really good with First Racing. :)

Anyone seriously interested in sim racing should also take a look at the de facto center for everything sim racing related: Race Sim Central. http://forum.rscnet.org/forum.php
