I checked the archives, but find no mention of this. When stuck in traffic, I notice that my car (97 355 spider) will occaisionally have the idle speed up, from 1,000 rpm to perhaps 1,400 rpm for up to a minute, then drop back down to 1,000 rpm. Is this normal? What causes this?

I know, I'm being the "anal" Ferrari owner.... ;)

Note next time whem this happens if the cooling fans are on at the sametime. When the fans come on it puts quite a load on the alternator and the engine will bog down. The idle valves will open up and allow more air into the engine causing the rpms to rise. 1400 rpm is high though even with the cooling fans on..You may want to get the idle contol motors looked at.

As Tom Mentions - It is your cooling fan(s) kicking on... If both are in play - I think that 1000 - 1400 is not that unusual if both are kicking in (maybe a shade on the high side). However check next time and see if you are right on 1400 or just below it is really difficult to be exact just eyeballing - if you are at 1300 - that seems to be where mine would kick up to just after a full service and everything running normal.

I wouldn't be overly concerned either way - just keep your eye on it - and your temp gauges.

Thanks guys, the speed hits 1400 max, more often between 1100 and 1300. I will watch it, and see if it coincides with the cooling fans.
