I'll share a deep discount to FChat members on my company's new infrared temp monitor that I have on a chat forum for R/C cars for April only. Since this is a great tool for mechanics, I thought a few FChatters would like to get their hands on one. It normally retails between $39.95 & $49.95. GTO84 has one and constantly uses it while working on cars.

Your net that includes shipping is $29.95. It comes with an Energizer battery, beltclip and warranty (Cool item for around the house to check cold spots arounds doors, ducts, fireplace flu's, the wife, etc. US UPS Shipping only.

Will it work on my cat? I don't think he likes getting his temp taken rectally.... ;)

Neither do I, come to think of it. Okay, I'll order one!

Sounds like a good deal Peters.

Can you share some specs, like what's the accuracy (tolerance), how far do you have to hold it from the object being measured, how does ambient temp. affect it?

Maybe I'm asking too much for a hobby temp reader but I would want it to be accurate if for instance I'm checking tire temps at the track...

OK, thanks Peter. I was actually looking for the tolerance (ie .1 deg. +-), but like the list you made, it looks like it's a hobby thermometer. No offense, but I wouldn't trust the readings to tell me if my bearings are heating up or if my tires are up to temp or if one cylinder is running hotter (leaner) than the others.

A quick Google gave me this (with tolerance specs):
    http://tinyurl.com/3nzv4

I don't mean to disparage your product. On the contrary, if I wanted to check all those things you mentioned above (minus the auto stuff), I would definitely use your thermometer, but for less than $100 more I can get piece of mind that the reading is accurate!

Incidentally, header temps can get over 500 degrees Farenheit (beyond your thermometer's capacity), not to mention if you have a 4 inch swath to read from, most likely you will be reading the block temp along with the header.

I don't believe my cat's butt can reach much beyond 102 degrees F so the temp range is fine with me... ;)

    Peter,
I want to cancel my order. I bought it based on the web site description which says:

"High-End infrared temperature monitor measures from 0 to 400oC "

I want to measure header temps that can go well above 210°C, as well as radiator & other coolant temps that can be at or above 210°C.
