Does anyone know how to remove the section of center console which houses all of the switches? So far I have removed the ashtray and the locking mechanism for the glove box and have the switch console loose, but I am afraid to force it out. I am attempting to straighten the AC switch on my 87....been bugging me since I bought the car! Thanks in advance.

Take out the ashtray to loosen the upper end of the console, then lever out each of the 4 individual switches out of the bezel at the rear of the console. There's some screws under the switches that hold the lower part down. The switches come out individually, not as a single unit.

Carefully pry out the temperature control units -- they're held in by plastic spring clips front and back. Then you can reach under and pop out the four toggle switches -- they come out from the plastic surrounds; don't pry the plastic surrounds out.

Then you can see another phillips screw holding down the back of the console top. (The front one was under the ashtray.) Then the entire unit lifts out.

Keep in mind that the AC temperature control will likely be an replacement part, and being misaligned may be just the way it is. The GE unit in my car died, and all Ferrari offered as a replacement was an Italian part that didn't line up properly. The shaft had a half moon top that didn't point the right way when you screwed down the knob. You can get the original GE parts from an aircon supply company with a full round shaft.

If you already have a full round shaft on the knob you're trying to align, you don't need to remove the console -- there's a hex set screw on the knob.

It's pretty tight quarters in the console, so there's not really room to turn the housing -- they pretty much only fit one way ... and just barely, for the replacement parts.

If you remove any wires, make sure you take notes and label things -- there are more wires than color codes.

And search the archives - this has come up many times before.
