My water temp gauge does not seem to work in my '79 308 GT4 (or I am having very good cooling at 60C ;) The oil temp does work (~90C running). I have looked through the 308 GT4 shop manual but I could not seem to find anything that pinpoints where to look.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? The location of the sensor? Or how to test it? Do I even need to worry about the water temp and just rely on the Oil temperature?

    Thank you!

Replace it. It's on the lower passenger side of the radiator. VW's use the same sensor.

When I owned my GT-4 years ago I had to give my oil pres. and temp gauges a tap on the glass of the gauge to get the needle to move off the peg.

Isn't that that the electric fan switch sensor? On a 328 the temp guage sensor is in the cast pipe that crosses between the two heads right in the middle of the V of the engine underneath the intake plenum chamber.

Iain is right. The one on the rad is for the fans. Water temp sender is under the "Y" on the water pipes connecting the intake manifold to water pump. Start by checking connection of lead.

    Thanks everyone for providing input!

I ended up taking the 308 GT4 to my Fcar mechanic. The water sender was disconnected (unplugged). I had watched him fix it. I am in no way a mechanic so my explanation of what I saw may not be the best.

The water sender is in the V underneath the carbs more to the right side of the block. It is on the thermostat housing. It was difficult to get to it so the Oil Filter was removed. This allowed easier access inside the V. A pair of pliers was needed to place the wire/connector on the sender unit due to the tight spot.

After I had that fixed.. I had a fuel line leak and lost a tank full of gas within 10 minutes. Still the original fabric covered fuel lines (48k miles).

...But I did have a smile on my face the entire 10 minutes of driving my GT4 ;)

    Kevin,

You really need to have all the fuel lines replaced along with the filler neck and the hose between both tanks.

If they are indeed original, then you have a fire hazard.
