So if somebody took a non-factory body, with a roof line that did not match the original car, and installed it on a frame that was only partially made by Ferrari, without any confirming serial numbers on the body or the frame, then the end result would just be a kit car? Is that what we're pretty much saying. :)

Very funny ;) :D ... come-on Horsefly that body looks about as close to a SWB Ferrari as my Toyota Tarago. Atleast they could have measured one.

And yes that car (piece of **** IMO) will always be a REAL Ferrari 'cause of the chassis ... so don't confuse the world with more of your anal inspections ;)

There are cr@p Ferraris too ... I definitely do not get a hard on everytime a Ferrari is in my presence. They are just cars, some good some not so good.

Kevin -- Greg did not build either of the 250 GTO Spyders. Both were built by Mark Gerish, the SWB one for Frank Beard on a chassis provided by Greg. (I was project manager for that car.) Greg had nothing to do with Hil Raab's (the LWB) -- that was built on a chassis Hil owned.

Anyone have a few close up shots of the vent behind the doors on a real GTO?
I'm fabricating new ones on one of our cars and trying to figure out what is correct to open it up. I have seen round holes, a pair of narrow slots, and one that was completely open.. but no idea what is the right way.

    Hi Chelle, :)
I found this shot of #3809 showing the vent behind the door, and I'm pretty sure this is made the right way, since the car is very original !!!
I hope you have been helped by this! :)

Chelle, I have a copy of the GTO book by Lewandowski and the pictures in it confirm Bugattiart's pictures to be of the real deal. If you have other questions, let me know, you're more than welcome to borrow this "bible of GTO" anytime you like.

BTW: What is that flap for behind the slot on the right side?

    LOL!

Yeah you can tell the GTO was made for racing: The bodywork is littered with byzantine little things everywhere.

lol.... well if I had an original I wouldn't forgive myself for personalizing it. Indeed, someone would probably shoot me for driving it daily or installing a/c a stereo or carpet :)
this way we get the best of both worlds :)

if you haven't done so already, check out the Crystal Cove pictures in the Southern California thread from last Saturday. I understand the silver car to be a replica....

I've seen that one before. Nicely built but all wrong. And I don't mean just the fact, that it is a Spider. There are many, many details completely wrong on this car, which is a shame given the build quality. If you put all that effort into it, why not take a close look at pictures of the real thing? Beats me.

I'm not sure of the exact differences between replicas, reproductions and clones, but my understanding is that the silver one at CC was a clone built on a 250 GTE by DK (?) and offered for around $300,000. I have about 50 pics each of it and of the real one that was at Fontana a few weeks ago for the Historics if anyone needs details.

Are we sure, that both cars (silver and #22) are real? I would have said replicas in both cases. Real good ones though. But then again not all GTOs were built the same.

s/n 3873 is pretty close to an original number isn't it
that must have been manufactured the same day of a real thing.
    anyway that replica looks impressive!
