I was looking at an '85 308 as a prospective purchase, and the dealer advised me that one of the brake calipers was leaking. He was going to replace it (maybe rebuild, but he said replace).

    Two questions:

    1. Should he (I) be concerned about the other calipers? In British sports cars, I know that when you fix one weak spot in the hydraulics another one pops up.

    2. What does it usually cost to get a caliper replaced? I'm sensing this could be on the horizon if I go with this car...

    Thx!

Caliper repair kits come w/seals and dust boots. Expect $150 - 200 to fix. You might flush and add new brake fluid while you are in there.

The calipers themselves for these are NOT cheap if you just want to buy a new one. Rebuilding is the way to go, or what I did was just get rebuilt calipers all around from T. Rutlands, and send back my cores in exchange. They did a really nice job, the calipers were in great shape. I replaced all four myself.

Re: Porsche interchangability, I investigated this and never found 100% confirmation that the 914 calipers would work. I think that what I found was that they were both ATE calipers but for some reason was never able to confirm that they were the same thing. You'll want to note that the 308 calipers have special "spacer" washers, four per caliper (two for each caliper main bolt) and I think these might be special to the 308-fitted ATE caliper.

The advice I received was to change the fronts together, and change the rears together. That said, aren't the brake lines on the 308 "diagonal" so that the left front and right rear feed from one side of the brake fluid reservoir and the other diagonal from the other side of the reservoir? This may come to bear on the idea that fixing one would cause the others to leak... I beleve the rears are actually isolated from themselves hydraulically, and same for the fronts.

The Rear Calipers on a 308 are the same as a 914 Porsche. However, the parking brake lever is flipped to operate in an alternative direction and they have a spacer block between the 2 caliper sections. A standard 914 rear caliper kit will work and so will the pads. I have owned many 914's and keep this stuff in my garage. When my 308 needed rear pads I recognized the rear caliper and pulled a set of 914 rear pads out (Same Thing). Warning the overhaul of 914 calipers is tricky. These calipers have adjustment lugs for the airgap/freeplay. Any porsche 914 manual will give you the details. You screw out the pistons. The front look like nothing more than a standard 911 A caliper found on any 911sc, carrera. - Not confirmed but the pads do cross over. On my testarossa a few years ago I remember crossing the pads over to the BMW early M5 pads. Worked perfect. I have always found that brake items are usually mass production items that are crossed from manufacturer to manufacturer all the time.
    Just my 2 cents.
