How many Ferraris do y'all suppose are in NM? Lived there for 8 years and saw only one - lady driving a 308 with NM plates.
I have been going to S.F., since way before it was a tourist town. My family has been going there since the mid 60's. I have been there at least 40 times. I was thinking of trailering a Boxer to S.F., during the summer ? I love the roads. - No cops and few motorists. A drive up the ski basin ? Any ideas on some roads ?
Ralph, Gimme a little time to think. OMG, a Boxer in NM. There were times when I would drive for over an hour and see absolutely no one. Don't count on no cops, tho', they'll be there when you least suspect, although if you are driving a Boxer you'll probably be able to talk them out of a ticket. If you've been there 40 times you probably know about most of these places but please indulge me as I love Tierra Encantada and love to ramble on about it. There's a book, "The Spell of New Mexico" which explains this obsession. A drive from SF up to Taos and/or Los Alamos would be fun. In Taos, check out here: http://sagebrushinn.com/ (Sagebrush = Chamisa) We have stayed there twice and wish I were there again tonight. Damn, I can smell the pinon burning in the fireplace. Lots of history - from Georgia O'Keefe (which reminds me, a ride out to Ghost Ranch/Abiqui is fun) to the kids from Boy's School at Los Alamos who were housed there when J. Robert O. and Gen. Grove took over their digs to build the bomb. And don't miss Truchas, site of filming "The Milagro Beanfield War." As long as you're there (with the Boxer), try a run from SF down to Tijeras the back way, east side of the Sandias - lotsa 2-lane twisties - and return to SF via I-40 thru Tijeras Canyon to ABQ, get off at Tramway and head north as far as you can go to intercept I-25 back up to SF. If you like, you can stop at the Sandia Casino just about where Tramway cuts back into 25. Or... you could take the tram (world's longest aerial tram) to the top of Sandia Peak for dinner at sunset from 9000+ ft overlooking ABQ and the west mesa. I guarandamtee you'll never forget it. If you can't get lucky after that, you're on your own. Only problem there is who's gonna watch the Ferrari while you're wining and dining 4000 ft above it. OK, so instead go to Garcia's Kitchen on N 4th for down and dirty genuine mexican eats. Huevos Rancheros ain't bad. If they ask, "red or green" ask which is hotter as it varies from day to day. Most of the natives drink Tecate. They say Corona is spanish for "We piss in the bottles" and they snicker in the kitchen when gringos order it. You can park out front and watch your ride while you chow down. If you are adventurous you could always shoot out I-40 to Gallup. Stay at the El Rancho Hotel. Originally built by the brother of D.W. Griffith (old-time movie mogul). All rooms have brass plaques on the door indicating who stayed there while filming westerns in the incredibly beautiful red cliff country thereabouts. I stayed in Rita Hayworth's old digs for a week there - the vibes were great. OK, maybe it was my imagination. All right then, from I-40 in Gallup go south on 603 to 53 and hang a left heading east to Ramah. Stop at the Blue Corn Cafe for lunch and don't be surprised if some of the locals walk in with a .45 on their hips. Open carry (guns, not whiskey) is legal in NM and it helps to keep folks polite. After lunch head out east on 53 toward El Morro and stop there for a look-see. Most folks think this country was settled when the pilgrims stepped off the Mayflower onto Plymouth Rock. Not so. At El Morro (aka "Inscription Rock" and the site of filming a movie by the same name starring Joel MacRae) you'll see a carving in the rock, "Paso por Aqui, Juan de Onate", which predates the Pilgrims by at least 12 years. After you've had your fill of pre-pilgrim history here, continue on 53 east to intercept I-40 at Grants, then it's back to ABQ, catch 25 and up to SF. These roads are a great drive for the sake of driving. IMO, September is the absolute best time to go to all these places. OK, boys and girls, that concludes today's episode. Be sure and tune in again next week when we'll visit the southern half of the Land of Enchantment and visit such places as Fort Craig, Ruidoso (and we'll learn why everybody says Rio-doso), Silver City, Las Cruces, Fort Sumner (the grave of Billy the Kid and why his headstone was stolen and who got it back and how) and Hatch - famous for Hatch chiles. Thanks for the write up. I do not consider myself a tourista. I remember Santa Fe "before" Mcdonalds, The French Pastry shop, The Hilton, and DeVargas Mall etc.... I remember the big outside mall (the only mall at the time) with Furrs cafeteria and TG & Y. I am also a chili addict. I have smuggled Green (Hot and Extra Hot) Hatch chili on Southwest airlines flights. One year I brought it directly on the plane, with the ice coolin it down. Obviously everyone wanted a sample. I have since that time, learned to freeze approx 34+ freezer bags worth of the wanted material. - From a sack. I hope to trailer a car to S.F. soon. - It sure would be fun. There may be another F. Chatter from NYC, that will drive his 6.0 thru town. He wants to drive all the way from NYC to Texas. - From Tx to Calif. I have spoken with him, about meeting up with him in Tx, and driving on to S.F. I will post in this section; if I do show up in town. Would luv to meet up with some folks. Perhaps we can have a cup of coffee in the old F. Pastry shop ?

Hey Guys, Just thought I'd let you know what kind of F-cars there are in NM. There's a real estate investor who's got a couple 308s, two Boxers, Dino, Challenge Stradale, TR I think too. There's another guy who's got an F40 and a California Spyder. And there's quite a few 308s and 328s running around, too. There here, just don't see them too much.
