What happens when you hit a Bald Eagle

Correction, tastes like California Condor!

 

very cool..theres a bald eagles nest by a lake near where i live. i too didnt know we had em this far south(i live about 30 min north of houston). Ive lived in this town my whole life and i had never seen one. Then about two years ago, i was fishing and one flew over my head about 30 35 feet in the air, it really was impressive. theyre huge when you see em with there wings spread..

 

This weekend, I went to look at some remote land for sale. As I was driving up the dirt road toward the property, a large wild turkey ambled across the road in no particular hurry. I had time to stop and roll down the window and take a closer look at him. Last night, I spotted 3 deer grazing by the side of the highway.

Does 1 turkey and 3 deer equal an injured bald eagle story? I don't think so. Next time I'll have to bag a bigfoot on film.

They are amazing and intimidating birds..

When I was in the military I was stationed on Adak Island 1200 miles down the Aleutians. The bald eagles there were like pigeons in a park. They were absolutely everywhere. Usually when you would take the trash out in the morning there would be 2 or 3 on top of the dumpster wanting to inspect what you were tossing out..

I was not unusual to see a dozen or more on the roof of the dining hall
They were total opportunists but amazing to look at - and completely unafraid of us there.
We were told if we saw a feather on the ground around the dumpster and were dumb enough to pick it up we would be ending our careers.

I went fishing in the Canadian NWT a few years ago with my dad and brothers. Lunch every day required you catch a fish, usually a large lake trout, to feed us and our guides. One fish would feed about 6 people. During one lunch, the guide threw the carcass of the fish on the rocks near the water after he'd finished cutting out the filets. The remains of the fish had to weigh about 10 pounds as it ended life over 20 pounds. I was shooting video of the surroundings and just as the camera crossed the carcass of the fish, a bald eagle swooped down and carried it off. I have the whole thing on film, it was pretty amazing. The birds wing span had to be 6 feet or more.

For any of you North Texas guys there's a Bald Eagle at the Fort Worth Zoo. It had been injured and isn't able to be re-released into the wild. You're able to get fairly close to it and I have to tell you it's HUGE! These birds are something else. Great Zoo by the way. Bald Eagle, White Tigers, and Komodo Dragon on top of everything else. If your in Dallas or Fort Worth it's worth a trip. Go early and have breakfast at The Old South Pancake House just down the road.

Glad you did the right thing and called the right people! That is a beautiful bird, and as far as I know also a very rare sight in southern Louisiana.

 

I'll never forget the first time I saw a bald eagle in Yellowstone park in 1971. There were a lot fewer then and it was quite exciting. I have seen hundreds since (no exageration, I have been to Alaska where they are thick!) but I never tire of them. In Colorado, we have a few breeding pairs plus many come through from Canada that we see in the winter. I know if I hit one, I would be mortified.

Since some are bragging about backyard wildlife. Best sight on our 5 little acres was a young golden eagle on our fence (I have pix!). If there are other birders out there, we came accross a pair of sharp shinned hawks in the road last week in front of our house making little hawks with a crow squawking defiantely about 10 feet away! Made me think of the old beatles tune "Why Don't We Do It In The Road."

kelly, it was really great what you did and i applaude you, but i have to say this- the half naked guy in the pic, he looks like he really likes you, did he try to make you squeal like a pig in the woods ?? lollol lol

 

Just to show I'm not nuts, I did hit the bird with a Ferrari Truck, of course not all the decals are still on it, but it is pretty well dressed up.

When dialling 911 about hitting the Eagle I had to explain I hit the eagle then explain what I was driving. Ferrari truck towing a Ferrari car.

I was unsure if they were sending the paddy wagon to send me to the mental home or real help. HAHA

Good job! I love all birds except the dexterous ones. I've even helped injuried birds myself and raised a few myself.
