This happened once before, the engine sounded like it had a rev limiter when it hit 4-5k rpms. I belive it was a modual of some type near the flywheel on the bottom of the engine. The shop cleaned up the connections and all was fine.

It has started again after 5-8k miles, and it seemed like a simple fix. Any ideas on this? Name of unit? What does it do?

As a side note, I put 110 octane in the car before this started.

Alas, the Remote Ferrari Engineer Service!

From the mechanically challenged, not sure, something about it regulates or measures the flywheel rmps, lose connection, located on the bottom of the engine near the firewall. That's all I remember from before.

DP, a side note, Great race today in Atlanta ALMS-You should have seen the MC12 up close and in person. The pre race pit walk through is great. You can actually put your hands on these cars, although only a fool would..and the sound of the MC12...

If your flywheel is near the firewall on your 348, then we both need another drink.

It sounds like you had a problem with one or both of the crank position sensors. I Had the same thing happen to my car twice. If you jack the car up you can see them on the bottom and the side of the crank pully, at the front of the engine. Check the condition of the wires, under the rubber boot covering the connector, comming off of the wiring loom, that attaches to the end of the sensor. Make sure that everything is clean and connected properly, and that there are no busted wires. Now if every thing checks out fine there, the next thing you will want to have a look at are the spark plug wires. A shorted out spark plug wire will cause the same thing to happen.

    David -

The Crank Position Sensors are little rubber connections at the very front/bottom of the engine near the firewall. They have small metal clips that kind of lock them into place. You'll need to remove the splash guard to see them.

There used to be some gorgeous illustrations of them (before the server crash). I'll try to find them again and post.

    That would be great.

You know how heavy the splash guards are, they were deleted....or torn off long ago

If it were me, I'd find a replacement splash guard or have one made. In the rain, you'd have a huge amount of water being thrown at the CPS, in addition to the alternator and AC (which you don't have). Yeah, they get wet anyway even with the spash guards in place, but there's a difference between getting wet, and being constantly pounded with water (at least in my opinion).

    Ernie? Your thoughts?

Yeah he could get a replacement, but it wont' kill the car if he doesn't. I have drove mine with out the guard for almost a year. They mostly get mucked up from the grim that comes off of the road. I don't drive mine in the rain, so the only water I have to worry about is a puddle in the street. Having said that, I do have the guard back on. But the guard covers the gas tank and fuel pumps on the bottom. It wouldn't hurd to hit them with some electrical contact cleaner while your under there.

Come to think of it mine has the challenge brake ducks under there, it may be that this "shielded box" covers some of that. It appears to be 1-2 feet lenthwise, and runs the with of the car....

IF not, GT car parts or T Ruthlands may be a good source? DP {(better know as FS) for you evil minded, that does not stand for f**k Sh*t}, you got any?

Did you see that TRuthlands is having an open house on the 7th?
