WHILE DRIVING MY 550 FROM A DRIVE YESTERDAY, ALL OF A SUDDEN, I LOSE 1/2 MY POWER AND THE "SLOW DOWN" LIGHT STARTS TO FLASH ALL TEMPS WERE FINE AND I JUST COASTED HOME VERY SLOW CHECKED THE FLOOR, AND ENGINE, NO LEAKING OF ANY FLUIDS MY THOUGHT IS THAT THE ECU UNIT WENT BAD, OR ITS NOT FIRING UP ON ALL 12 CYLINDERS.. HOPEFULLY ITS A LOOSE CONNECTION OR SOMETHING IN MY $$$ FAVOR THE CAR WILL BE FLATBEDDED TO WWOC THURS ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR 550?? THANKS ALL BRUCE
Damn, that sucks... i'm sure it's something minor Bruce... Go open the hood and just start jiggling things...
Your car went into 'Limp mode'. The computer thinks the cats are overheating. Could be a sensor, ECU, or a ground problem.
THATS CORRECT...LIMP MODE MY TR ONLY HAD ONE MODE "STOP CAR" CANT SEE THE CATS GETTING HOT...HOPEFULLY A 10 MINUTE FIX...WILL SEE DO YOU OR HAVE YOU HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH YOUR 550?? THANKS, BRUCE
The exact same thing happened to me. It turned out to be a grounding problem. An easy, no pain, low dollar fix- if they diagnose it the right way.
THANKS FOR THE LESS PAINFULL $ ANSWER I HAD THE CAR OUT ALL DAY..NO PROBLEMS UNTIL 1ST GEAR HAD NO MORE GUTS, THEN THE IDIOT LIGHT WENT ON "SLOW DOWN" I DONT THINK THE SENSOR WENT ON THE CATS, BUT WILL SEE THANKS ALL BRUCE
Maybe you need a new O2 sensor? I have had a plethora (Non Ferrari) of cars that have gone into "Limp Mode", and its always turned out to be the o2 sensor Fuking up.... Just trying to help a brother!
I dont think it is the O2 sensor. On the 550 the O2 sensor won't send it in to limp more - just triggers the "check engine" light - still has full power.
Bruce- I had the EXACT same problem with the 360 about a month ago....the problem was with the temp sensor on the CATS. James at Norwoods took it out for a long drive with the SD2 hooked up on it and it finally acted up for him...he watched the temp went from 600 degrees and suddenly jumped up to 1100 degrees (which is not how it would behave if the cats were really overheating), slow down light went on and then 1/2 bank shut down - sounded like a revved up sewing machine! Then it went back to normal 600 degrees again. The sensor was not expensive and very easy for him to swap. The problem was intermittent and took two visits to Norwoods before the problem would show itself (of course, it happened all the time when it wasn't at the shop!)\ Good luck! Frances
Bruce - give me your number again. This is the one item of 550s with which I have extensive experience. Or call my cell. It's way too long to type out... --Dan
Hi guys, Just got the update from WWoC about the 550. Left sided fuel pump needs to be replaced. Anyone know (besides the obvious of course)...where to look for this part??? Part no#173894. Thanks!
The 550 automatically goes into limp mode when a limp-wristed pansy drives it for too long. Give the keys to Andrea and she'll get things straightened out!
THANKS BILL FOR YOUR WARRANTED ANSWER HOW ARE YOU DOING, ITS BEEN A WHILE?? BIZ OK, FAMILY?? ILL TRY AND CALL YOU NEXT WEEK REGARDS MY FRIEND, BRUCE
