Bill, Bill, Bill, you're working too way too hard. :)

But I have been eyeballing a car like this. Yeah, it's a 67, but the early ones are getting pricy.

Ah, a Stradale... Wonder where I can find one with high mileage on the cheep? :)

But, you're right, I can't stand superslabs. Seriously, I start falling asleep. I just can't do what I used to do. My personal record was a 24-hour buzz from Santa Fe to Memphis. Gawd, I hate I-40!

    How about a 456?

Or if you need a vert, a 400i conversion?

Well, Malcolm sold the 456 I wanted. Called me a bottom feeder. :)

I have thought about Rodney's car. Maybe save it from getting chopped up.

But, I'm surprised. None of you have mentioned a 3x8 car!

I have though of doing this exact thing many times. My choice would be a Porsche 928 I think. Big V8, good for long distance cruising, room for bags int he back, etc.

    Get a GTS.

You might take a beating on the auction, but you made it clear $ wasn't a problem. Thus I don't see it as a big deal. If you don't want to take the beating, like I said, you can take it back to Tejas, throw some slicks on it, and you will have a fun car.

Never said the Maser is a chick car. But if you get a 360, I am sure the wife will love to have the Maser. :)

    Good luck.

Yeah, Ralph, but in keeping with the spirit of this adventure, i'd think it would need to be an Espada beater car. Texas glamour.

    My favorite selections so far:

    1. Rodneys 365. It has great A/C and has been driven cross country numerous times. Not much beating to take if you sell it either.

    2. Tillmans boat tail Riviera. Also has great A/C and it just looks cool. How much beating can you take on a car that cheap? It also has the advantage of being American, which means any mechanic can work on it if needed.

    3. This: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6240&item=4544640745&rd=1 because it's the right color or this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6240&item=4544244766&rd=1 because it's a convertible and has everything you want. When you're done and ready to take a bath on it, call me. :)

    4. This because I owned one once and loved it. Great long distance car:

I could go on all day.

Maybe you SHOULD just take the Maserati.

Dude, just take your son to the Grand Canyon. Some things are way bigger than your everyday notes. I was there at 14. A view that stays w/ me forever.

Dale: You can buy my recently deceased friends 308GT4, it is stored around Tallahasee, and do a little maintenance as I know you like to do, then drive it to the coast. It is a late car, yellow with brown leather, and ran beautifully when he put it in the garage. In 1985. Might need an oil change and a battery, but it is perfect for a bottom feeder. Well, it also could possibly need other fluids and maybe a gasket or two, nothing you couldnt do in the garage,

    Make your hotel reservations yet?

How about the XJR? Selling it at auction might be the hard part...

    Choice #2: Mondial Cabriolet 3.2

#1 is great for cruising the highway, #2 if you want a drop top.

#1 has a huge trunk (in Ferrari terms), you still have the back seats in the Moondog.

Besides, how many other 18 year olds got to go cross country with their dad in a Ferrari...

The Caddy w/the longhorns is a bad idea. Take a look at gas prices today!! I'd suggest taking your Maserati or picking up a BMW 3-Series convertible for your trip. It'll be much more fun to drive & more dependable (as odd as that sounds). You want your son to have a great time w/out looking like an idiot in one of those huge Caddys.

What kind of car does your son drive?

If he's a poet im guessing he might also be a "tree hugger" and resent driving
3k miles in something that gets 4mpg.

    But...

    What about a Dino?

Dale, if he's not into cars at all, you might want to consider something comfortable... If you're gonna drive from Texas to California in a hot, old Ferrari, that might not be so poetic for him... Maybe the Maserati is the best way to go and just do cool father/son things along the way... Or buy a Trans Am or something like that and, at the end of the trip, when you're back in Texas - give it to him...

I'm embarrassed to say that he drives a 1998 MB E320 that used to be my daily driver. In 2 years of driving, he has never washed it. :(

It may be genetic, my dad was a big hunter and fisherman. I haven't shot anything in years. Last time I went fishing was two years ago in Canada.

But don't worry about the tree hugger part. He is a jock poet. He plays varsity basketball, but still prefers girls to sweat.
