If you get done for speeding in Europe do you get points on UK licence?
Thank you As I understand an agreement has been reached but is not yet in force. I was in a UK car 3 weeks ago that was pulled over in France. Escorted to Police station and fined only. No mention of points etc
No they cant add points here to uk licence they are trying to get bill passed, but at mo, no probs, only the on the spot fine to worry about, thats all they are interested in.
im pretty sure they cant, but will be able to soon, no rules. Cant they confiscate your car though !!!!!
over the kph eqiv to 100 mph they can if they want, but they work on a sliding scale the higher the speed the higher the fine, on the spot, and if you not got cash you have to go to a machine to take out, if you still cant get cash you can have car taken.
Don't worry about points. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/tm_objectid=15370149&method=full&siteid=50143&headline=cannonball-rally-cars-seized-by-cops-name_page.html They were made an example of. If you hard shoulder and weave in traffic, your out of there! So don't behave like a wanker. If it was the M25 and a bunch of frogs did it, wouldn't you be pissed?
tonyh; It has only just begun -YES TOLD YOU SO IN MARCH French Police can take your license for excessive speed now and send it to the UK Police, Spain also. French & SPanish Police can turn you around and send you back out of their country, they will seize your car if you can not pay the on the spot fine, and they do have the right to detain you now even to the point of jailing you for excessive speed. One Spaniard got 3½ years for 135mph equiv. in a Porsche. D11VE:J
I'm just trying to encourage people to act as they would at home. I think it would add to the occassion if going fast isn't primarily what we are there for. Good food, company and wine works for me?
isnt it embarasing when the kids come on here and show you up and think they know everything kids eh D11VE:J
At the risk of bumping , Fines in France: For Class 1 to 4 offences, if you pay within 3 days, they reduce the amount = "minor". If you pay within 30 days it's "normal". After 30 days it's "major". If it's contested or arrives at a judge, he decides without your involvement what the amount will be. This can be up to the "maximum" Class..Minor..Normal..Major..Maximum 1........11.....33......38 2........22.....35......75.....150 3........45.....68.....180....450 4........90....135.....375....750 5.....................................1500 repeating a class 5 offence 3000 and up to 3 months prison. Class 5 offences are always treated by the courts (no standard table of fines) License suspensions are at the decision of the judge and can be up to 3 years for "everyday" stuff. Obviously causing an accident whilst drunk is a bit more severe (6 years) Some examples: Insurance invalid 1500 + license suspended Red Light 135 / 750 + license suspended 0,5 to 0,8 g alcohol 135 / 750 + license suspended Speeding ....< 20 km/h..135..750 20 - 30 km/h..135..750 30 - 40 km/h..135..750 license suspended 40 - 50 km/h..135..750 license suspended ....> 50 km/h.........1500 license suspended They take the reduced speed on motorways due to fog etc. very seriously too. Also some towns have smog speed restrictions which you have to tune in to the radio (and understand French!) to know about. Speed cameras are not YET very widespread (although this is changing rapidly!), but this means a lot is done with handheld stuff and relies on the Gendarme. My French colleagues say "Just pay up on the spot. No-one has contested and won. And you could end up paying a lot more!" As the Maximum speed allowed anywhere in France is 130km/h, this means that (e.g.) 185km/h exceeds it by >50km/h. This is a class 5 offence which is the highest you can get and is in the same category as hit-and-run, for example. The basic penalty for this is 1500 and a suspension of the license for up to 3 years. The judge has the possibility to not go up to this maximum if he feels generous! The Gendarme may confiscate the license on the spot. If it is a UK License, I think it will be returned to the UK authorities to do with as they please. There is also a clever little law which goes as follows: EU drivers wishing to drive in France can do so using their EU license and there is no need to convert it to a French license EXCEPT if the said EU license has been suspended. Even the French aren't too clear on this but it COULD mean that a suspension is registered and the next time you want to drive here you have to take a French Driving Test!!!!!! All of the above is, of course, if they throw the book at you. Best chance is to deal with the Gendarme on the spot. If it gets into French bureaucracy ........ no comment!
I trawled the infos together from different sources (French automobile clubs etc. and also official documents like http://www.midi-pyrenees.equipement.gouv.fr/dre/professionnel/transports_routiers/convention/annexe3.pdf) You can search on "amendes" "contraventions". The previous comments on points transfer are valid. There are agreements in place, but the implementation is a bureaucratic nightmare. Certainly even between Germany and France there is currently no points transfer and you don't find two EU countries working together more closely than they do! I can tell you there's nothing that beats a German Autobahn - anything else is coitus interruptus!
