308 rear calipers rebuild issue

Guys I'm having a hard time rebuilding the rear calipers on my 82 308. So far 2 of the largest rebuilders in the N. East have touched them and they claim that there is nothing that they can do about them. One of them being CARDONE. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I rebuilt mine with a Porsche kit and all is well.
What problems are you running into?

 

I re-built mine with a kit from T. Rutlands, it was pretty a easy job.

 

Not sure if you intend to do the work yourself or not; but if the problem is "We don't knwo anything about Ferrari brakes", buy the rebuild kits from www.allferrariparts.com or T. Rutlands for cheap and they're nothing too difficult to rebuild, any below-average mechanic such as myself can do it with a little care and attention. I didn't buy the stuff to rebuild the parking brake mechanism, just the basic hydraulics; piston seals, dust boots & caliper half o-rings as I recall. A little attention to screwing the pistons in, etc with a little shadetree ingenuity is all it takes!

 

I agree with WaltP and don_xvi. I did both the front and rears with a kit/kits from T. Rutlands. No problems and no surprises!!! Very straight forward.

 

I did the e-brake when I did mine because I didn't want to get it all back together and have to tear it back apart in the near future.

Both of the rebuilders claimed that they can't do them. My local parts store found somebody in CA and they are on the way there. Chances are that I will pay more for all the shipping than the rebuild it self. I was really surprised with CARDONE not being able to do them. They are a very big reman company with very good reputation.

 

Sounds like they can't do them, because they choose not to.

These are simple ATE calipers, that many people, myself included
have rebuilt.

Hm!!! The shims
Well!!!! I did remove them but did not pay any attention the way they were.
What is the best way if any to re align the calipers on the hub?

 

ATE has the gasket kits listed for the 308 on the web.
Part #250020 for the rear & 250032 for the front.

 

Great link MarkG, I've never seen calipers in such bad shape as those in the article.

 

Got to agree that that 914 link write-up is outstanding (although I hope personally to never see the inside of another caliper ).

There's really no serious "method" required. The shims are typically not used to correct/set parallelism -- i.e., the shim stacks used at all mounting locations should be equal in thickness, and the caliper "roughly centered" with respect to the disk. The centering is not something that needs super-high precision, but it is critical that the shim stacks are all the same overall thickness.
