My 348 has recently been playing up in the gear changing department - I've problem engaging second gear even when the car is fully warmed up. Someone has suggested that it could be a syncro problem.

Has anyone else had the same experience? What can be done and how big the job is?

    Cheers.

I have been having the same type problem. Mine doesn't wanna get into 5th at freeway speed, and it also doesn't wanna get into, or out of 1st. I think it's the syncros. I changed the gearbox oil and found bits of metal, about the size of your finger nail, in it. So something is busted. I'm gonna rebuild it when I get the gumption to do it. But right now I'm so irritated with the car I'm letting it sit for a few months.

As for your problem it could be the syncros. But before you go that far, make sure that your shift cables are adjusted properly. I spent three days making sure mine were just right, before I found the metal bits in the oil.

Apart from changing up or down to 2nd, the other gears seem to work fine. When the car is at a stand-still, it also works ok.

Is changing/fixing the syncros a big job?

To some yes. Gearbox out. Take GB apart both shafts out... Can you double clutch into or heal toe into 2nd?

Double clutching works from time to time, but the sure way of getting into second gear is when the car is at a standstill. When it is in motion, it's mostly hit or miss - sometime effortlessly but often nigh impossible.

Why is it that only the 2nd gear is affected, not the others?

I'd 1st change the gear oil . Either Red Line or Mobile 1 and then see if it makes a difference. Also check the old oil to see if you've got any metal in it.

Good suggestion. I've emptied the old oil and found it to be clear and free of any foreign particles.

Any does it indicate if I did find any metal particles?
Also, does anyone know what the characteristics of a typical syncro failure are?

if a syncro is gone you'll still be able to shift into the gear, if the rpm is not matched you may get a grind.
I would check you linkage first. It's cheaper!
