having had 3 different portables as cover 100k per year in uk and Europe, without doubt navman is the best and easiest to use and the latest model comes all downloaded of all europe, so no downloading maps or nothing just plug in cig lighter and its working.

I use Tom Tom Go. Really easy to use and update. An added bonus is that it contains a rechargeable battery which lasts around 7 hours. This means that you don't have to plug it into your cigarette lighter (unless you really want to)

I use the tom tom 3 software with an ipaq and a bluetooth receiver. If I was going to go for a standalone unit, it would be the tt go. I think the latest software has full post code search which is a must - lets down version 3 I am using (can only do SW1Y 4 for example rather than SW1Y 4RX).

    Marc,

There's a full postcode search add-on for the Pocket PC version of TomTom. PM me an e-mail address and I'll make it available to you if you want it.

I've got a NAVMAN hooked up to my IPAQ and it's great - had this set-up for about 2 years now. Sometimes can take too long or have difficulty finding a satellite, but I assume this is a common problem for most low power GPS devices(?). I would certainly recommend it, but can't comment on how it compares with Tom Tom.

    I have Tom Tom 3 + iPaq.

Very useful and you can add speed camera location data for free. I think you can get warning software to get it to warn you when there is a speed camera approaching - otherwise you have to keep an eye on the display.

TomTom 3 and Axim for me. Sweet as the proverbial nut, but suits the tinkerer (Ric, I could do with the postcode add-on, matey).

Tony, I know how much of a technophobe you are so I'd go for the TomTom Go if I were you.

I have been using a NAVMAN system for the last four months or so.

It works ok 95% of time but sometimes I do not agree with the chosen routes....

Tom Tom has the same problem. It will always get you where you want to go but sometimes takes you on the wackiest of routes

The new version of TomTom gets released at the end of the month. If you pre-order from maplins.co.uk the new 700 series is £499 with their £50 rebate. The new 700 has maps for the whole of Europe on an internal hard drive. Details here:

Yes it is. They also provide a sticky pad that is smooth on the topside to allow you to sucker it onto your dashboard if you prefer

The suction cup to the windscreen works perfectly in the 355, no issues whatsoever. Takes seconds to mount / unmount.

    Small edit:

To buy from Maplin Electronics try maplin.co.uk as maplins.co.uk is a holiday advertising site....

    Thanks for the info!
