Absolutely the most informative site for Ferraris, fchat.com, has finally led me to a 87 testarossa. Had it not been for this venu, I would still be looking. Brian Crall led me to Brandon Lawrence of Sports Italiano in Burlingame,ca. and he found a two owner, 18k mi red/tan TR for 60K. Brian starts the eng-out svc next week. It still hasnt sunk in that I finally got one...or its got me...as my wife says. Thanks for all the help guys. A few pix of TR and other neat machines in Brandons shop. Cute gal is my daughter susan....cute guy with wide part is Brandon Lawrence, who by the way was sales mgr for Walnut Creek Ferrari, and who sold this car to Joe Montana in 1987.

Screw the TR. Check out that bird! What's that got, like 1,400 HP RR engine? THAT has got to be a thrill.

Congrats on the TR...nice, nice car. Good luck with it.

In reply...Dave, Brian starts svc on 13th, should be 2 weeks then transport up here. Kevin, the mo-mo in the 51 puts out about 1600 hp as this one is a 1650-7 lower end with -9 heads and banks. Boy is it cool when you lay the hammer down....when it goes it really goes. William, Flying lessons are reasonable for what it gives you...all the dimentions...pitch, roll and yaw. Try it, you'l like it. Thanks all

Welcome to the Testarossa club, she is beautiful. :)

Take good care of her, driver and don't baby her in the garage only, you will find a lot of the nightmare stories are just myth.

PS: Make sure you have all the seals and gaskets updated while you are having the major done, that way you will also be able to use fully synthetic oils for both engine and the trans without having to worry about leaks. Also, check the brake fluids and the lines, make sure they at least flush it and replace the fluids. All these should be done at least once a year. Have fun and enjoy.

I started off with a 90 tr black/black. I owned it for 3 years and loved it. Now I have a 94 512 yellow /black . I really love it. It is so willing to please. The thing is a lot faster than my old car. However the tr is just a beauty. Good luck.

    Steve,

The gentleman's name is Jim Smith of northwest Montana. His collection is impressive; F4U, Spitfire, P-51 (obviously), A-4, British Jenny, A-37, mini-Mustang and the list really does go on. He gave me my choice of which aircraft; the decision came down to the Corsair or the Mustang. The Mustang just seemed too legendary plus it's the one aircraft in which Chuck Yeager and I have flown. :)

Ironically, this was the first time I was able to fly in a helicopter, his Jetranger, a B3. From that point on, I decided I wanted to fly rotary wing; BTW, I like the term, "fling wing." That's one I've never heard!

Yes, the gun, rockets and missiles are quite an experience. A different high than riding in that beautiful airplane. My hat's off to YOU and, yes, check six. Way to go. Dane

....and we complain about the maintenance costs of a TR! :)

What do you figure the hours of maintenance per hour of flight time works out to?

I was under the impression that you almost had to have a personal refinery to feed that thirsty beast - what is your typical fuel consumption per hour?

Ferraris sound cool, but nothing matches a RR Merlin boring holes in the sky...

(Needless to say, I think that is the ULTIMATE toy)

Congratulations, super car! Looks great... and celebrity ownership, to boot!

Interesting note about Walnut Creek Ferrari - my own 328 was also originally purchased there in 87 (11/20/87). Get this - just pulled my sales records - the registration / warranty card is signed by Brandon Lawrence! Cool :).

Enjoy the TR! Does your daugher drive manual transmissions? What better car to learn on, I'd say!

Oh, and If you see Lawrence, ask him if he remembers selling a red 328 to a "Dennis Simkin" way back when... at age 40 or so... I think he's a real estate company owner.

Holy shatakki....Jim Smith and his brother have my P-40E that I restored 76-84. Sold it and my restored AT-6 to Colin Pay, Scone, Australia and he later moved the Kittyhawk on to them. Small world. Thanks for the pix...have never seen Jim or his 51. Pat, the maint cost is not to much once you have the machine restored. Same as your Ferrari. Just put on mags that cost $2500 to overhaul. Set I removed have been on for 11 years and 225 hrs. We do all our own work. Keeps the cost down and its a lot of fun. Fuel is lowest cost item. 60gph at 3.25 is high, but eng rebuild is now about 75K. How many hours we get out of it is sortta unknown. Generaly has to be topped at 400hrs and lower end usually grinds out 800hrs. BTW...is Lake Forrest at Lake Tahoe? Pat, its not my daughter buzzing around in the TR that worries me.My wife wants to run it around lots. Oh well, what can I say........?

South Orange County - it used to be called El Toro. I'm about 1 1/2 miles from the now closed El Toro MCAS.

What is the history on your Mustang? WW2/Korea vet? US or foreign service? Did it need restoring when you got it? etc (I love these stories)

Boy Pat...this is a long story but I'l try to shorten it up. An Inglewood p-51 produced april 44. Delivered to 9th AF in Italy and became the personal mount of Doc Watson, Depuity Wing Cmdr of the 15th Air Force. He became an Ace in this acft. Shipped back to the states ans assigned to the Rhode Island Air Gaurd then to Cal ANG. Somehow excaping Korea to be surplused at Mcclellan AFB may 58 for $1,200. Acquired by Trans Florida Acft and rebuilt as a Cavalier P-51 and sold to Indonesia circa 1970. Stephen Johnson of VanPac Carriers purchased 10 aircraft and tons of spares in 1980 and brought them back to US. He was a flying buddy of mine from the t-6 days and made me a deal I couldnt refuse. Took me three years to completly restore it and got it flying April 87. Been mo-moin around ever since. Well...I dont mo-mo around anymore...my 32 yr old son does. Have put 225hrs on it since rebuild. A great airframe, but engine is British and is prone to nit-picky things, that I'm absolutely convinced, was where Murphy's Law orginated. finis.........thanks for the intrest

Not as fast as a P51 but a great looking plane

I think my #1 Warbird would have to be a Spitfire although I LOVE Mustangs too

Theres a guy here in FL up N who rents rides in his P51, Think I'll have to pay him a visit someday :)

Steve, have you considered going to Mother Russia for a ride in a Mig 29 ? Thats gotta be insane :)

Small world is correct. Rest assured, Jim is one of the great guys out there. I should also tell you that he offered me the rides (I later took a spin in his A-37) as a gesture from one aviation enthusiast to another; a testament to the kind of person he is. Ironically, I am taking an Apache into my home town of Kalispell, MT (where two of his hangars are located) this summer for an airshow; Blue Angels 30-31 Jul 05. I'd love to see him again and give him a chance to sit in "my" seat. Now that I know about you, Steve, I'd like to, with your permission, mention this story as well. I think he'd get a chuckle out of it. Dane

P.S. Didn't this start as a "congrats on the TR" thread??

Dane...hell yes, tell him the story. He already knows the p-40 came from me, but the real story of his Curtissaurus Rex is that that airplane was burried in a wheat field in Lethbrige, Alberta, by a farmer who bought it for 50.00 after the war. John Paul of Bosie heard of it, approached the farmer and was told that if he could dig it up he could have it. Well,John did exactly that...sold it to me in 76 and I had restored it to about 70% and sold it to Col Pay. He finished it, stacked it up twice, then sold it to Smith. John Paul has two P-40s and a p-51 in Bosie. He also has a summer place in Hamilton, Mt. He knows Smith. I sure would like to see the p-40. Been a long time.

William....Stallion 51 in Kissimee gives dual control instruction and rides. Kinda expensive, but you get to fly the thing. Much better than just sitting there.

Pix of Tom Camps old P-40. He flew this in the movie 1941. He also did a lot of flying in the movie Pearl Harbor, with Pauls p-40. Now has restored a Grumman Wildcat.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!! That P40 is Awesome Thanks

My father grew up right next to the Sikorsky's in Bridgeport so now 1 of Igor's sons is essentially my Uncle and we are very close. His brother Sergei was building a "replica" of a Sikorsky WW1 fighter plane.

Not sure replica is the right word since the 1 building it is also a Sikorsky, Maybe a Continuation would be a better word choice

My "Uncle" told me that when his father started building airplanes back in the 1910s Paris, France was the capitol of world aviation and "Everyone who survived their inventions would meet in Paris and discuss flight & aviation."

Back then everybody had to teach themselves how to fly :)
