That's about right. Problem with #1 is, it applies to me, I just don't know how to do anything. I have tools 'cause a guy is supposed to have tools. I just don't know what to do with them. And to avoid any "funny" comments, tools = Craftsman, Mac, Snap-on, etc (I know someone out there will see "tool" and go in an off color direction )
Thanks...If I only had the time and energy to do what I really want in the garage...you cannot see it in the pic, but I have alot of Ferrari scale cars and alot of pics on the walls (out of shot)...I want my garage to look like another room in the house, not a garage...so cherry cabinets instead of plastic sheds would be a start.
Thanks...22 days and counting 'till baby. If you can convince my wife that I need a 2+2 to add to my 308, and have a spare $60-70K for a nice 365 GTC/4 or $50k for a 330 GT 2+2, I'll name the 2+2 after you I want one, but my wife seems to think other things are more important, like eating and feeding the baby...what does she know.
It's a funny thing, but I believe I'm a frustrated mechanic{only when I'm working on things I like} I had a very nice Porsche, In many ways superior to the 348, but you couldn't even find the engine, and it was just too "homoginized" for me. When I pop the lid on the Fcar and look at that engine sitting right where it should be, it says it all. When I'm busting my knuckles and cursing the Italians for not thinking about ever having to work on it, and then paying them $ 80 apiece for valve cover gaskets. well, I question my sanity. but then it just takes one short drive and I know why I did it!! Could I buy a 360, yeah, but then I'd shortly be at Ferrari's mercy in the maintenence department, and I'm not sure I'd want to "afford" that. Besides, what would I use to keep me out of the Gin Mills and away from the Hoochie Koochie girls? This is all a LOT cheaper than divorce!! [ just kidding dear !! ]
First, currently being unemployed (hopefully it won't last long!) I'm the "nanny" or "day care provider" for my girlfriend's 4-month old girl, Bella Jade. Beeeee-leeee-ve me, it's fricken work! But she watches the NASCAR, er I mean, SPEED channel with me without complaint so it ain't too bad Second, at the Cannon Beach event that the Northwest chapter put on I was able to show my girlfriend the various Ferraris and, in particular, the Mondial as I like 'em and it would be a good family car (work with me boys!). Guess what? She pointed to the Dino 256 (?) and said she would rather see that in the garage! God, I love her!
Lucky guy. My wife complained the whole way up to a gathering yesterday...20 minutes in the 308 with the top off (the 308 that is) and she barked that it was too hot...it was only 93 degees. Yes, I know she is 9 months pregnant and ready to burst, but driving a GTS in sunny Florida with the roof on is not my idea of fun. My wife thinks I like the 308 more than her...
Classic cars are the last raw very-limited-assist Ferraris made. It is hard to be a poser and drive a classic hard, and not have the car bite you back when you make an error.
Probably a good generalization, although on #1 I might be an exception because I would only be competent to do the detailing work myself - can't turn a wrench without creating more problems than I started with. But #2 is the big thing. The price of the car doesn't have much relationship to how much I want/enjoy it. (all this written from having had a lot of sports cars, all attention-intensive - but as a soon-to-be classic Ferrari owner) Which is probably the reason most modern performance cars are a bore. Too many computers, too much isolation. Unless you routinely hit 150mph, you don't have to work too hard in a 360 (or a 997...) - they've engineered all the sport of out of sports cars.
Gil, Your thoughts are funny because you sound just like me 2 years ago. I bought my 308 three weeks before my daughter was born. I figured if I didn't do it then, I would never get one. My wife was riding around in it 9 months pregnant, and the stiff suspension was not the best combination! Anyway, I did manage to get a 2+2! I bought my wife a Mondial for Xmas this year because we needed a "family Ferrari"! (Yes, I did the whole huge bow on the car in the driveway thing). She didn't realize she NEEDED a Ferrari, but since it's hers, what can she say? Now the whole family can go out in the Ferrari! (Yes, I kept the 308, of course....) Now I need another garage though, and that's a problem. Fun thing is that now I have a 2 year old that actually ASKS to take the Ferrari to the grocery store! THAT's bringing 'em up right! Birdman P.S. I would add "obscessed" to the list of classic owner traits, and perhaps "glutton for punishment".
the opposite problem happens when guys are screaming along on tracks in their 360 Challenge car, WAY above their heads, then the computer takes a dump & the driver goes into the wall. Ive seen it happen. Thats gotto be scarey as hell No driver aids in my race car its all me
I was expecting to see your wife riding in the 308 yesterday. I would have assumed you would have the top on and the A/C running. I think she is quite the sport to let you have your way, even if she was complaining about the heat. I think she will grow to like the Ferrari as you have such a strong passion for them. I guess one quality would be a persistent focus on the Ferrari cars that tends to rub off on others. Also, a forgiving quality when it comes to production perfection versus style. I will take a beautiful car with a drip from the top over a perfectly functioning rolling suppository. BT
Bill, my wife was a great sport...but she was sure to let me know that I got my way AGAIN! We did ride home with the A/C on and roof on. Quite comfortable, actually. While my wife doesn't have the passion for Ferrari, it only took 5 years for her to refer to my 308 as "she" and "her"...ex. You like "her" more than me; "She" gets more attention than me. My wife even knows some of the F1 drivers...Shumy, of course, and Rubens too. She had more fun in the Ferrari, though than on our friend's boat today...too bumpy. I warned her, but she insisted on going. Birdman, my wife has not fallen in love with the 2+2s yet. She does prefer the 330 GT2+2 over the 365 GTC/4, though. I'm still not sure which I would go after first. Leaning towards the GTC/4...but then I see a 330 and fall in love with it. Luckily my wife is not totally against more Ferraris in the household. But I made a deal with her that if I buy a big ticket item, she gets one too...and a Ferrari is not on her list. I could always try "Honey, I bought it for you" but I don't expect it to work when I follow up with "Don't even think about going near HER" ... luckily my wife doesn't know how to drive a stick and I'm not teaching her on my 308 Yikes!! Longer post than I expected! Sorry...
Then I won't have the excuse "honey, you can't drive a stick". You see, I want my cake and eat it too. I want her to like Ferraris and encourage me to get a 2nd and even 3rd, but I don't want her to actually drive them Luckily she likes other cars better, i.e. Mini Cooper convertible and that small Mercedes convertible (not the SL but the SLK?...really small 2 seat drop top). So now I have to come up with $50-70K for another Ferrari and $50k for a Mercedes or just $25-30k for the Mini...BOY DO I LIKE THOSE MINIS!
My wife would say we are all a bunch of idiots. Kind of like those two guys on the Sonic commericials. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Going back to the original premice, simular traits: I would bet over half of us over 40 owned a MGB Many of us own, or have oned a Toyota 4runner Many under 40 have owned, or own a Miata Many of us have owned, own, or wanted to own, a Fiat X/19 Many of us are not good employees, most are entrepanuers Most of us are into engineering, and mechanics We appreciate art I could go on, but this should be good fodder for a while
1. Never 2. Never 3. Under 40, never owned a Miata 4. Never got that drunk/stoned 5. Nope, married well 6. Yes, finally found one 7. Yes. So much so that I have the Christies' Modern and Impressionist art auction catalog subscription.
im not in the club yet, but will soon be. i love the mondials, and the 308,328. since im already thinking on two, then the other would be a tr, hands down. i too dont like the newer f cars all that much, but i do understand them. enzo just is plain ugly to me, imo. as for the list, i never have owned an mg, and i probably couldnt keep a job at mcdonalds, oh wait, they already fired me when i was 16. So, i had to go work for myself, which allows me to buy things like the aforementioned mondials, etc etc etc.
No to all of the above. Under 40 (bought the 308 at 30), never owned a 4Runner, never owned a Miata, not interested in the X/19, great employee (civil servant in fact), not into engineering or mechanics (my Dad is an engineer...does that count?), not an art fan, unless it's pics of Ferraris. SO, am I not a typical owner? Cleary my traits don't match your ideas...my mother always said I was unique
1. Doesnt apply - Not over 40 2. Yes - I guess Im the only 4Runner owner in the bunch! 3. No Miata 4. No Fiat 5. An O.K. employee and my entrepanuer ventures have fell short thus far 6. Not an engineer but into mechanics 7. Appreciate some art, definitely artistic cars
I'm willing to wager (well, a few bucks anyway!) that I am the poorest of Ferrari owners.... That is something that I am rather proud of - if the truth be known! I think PASSION is the one common thing amongst us all.... Money can always be made to be an issue, but if I can get a Ferrari than ANYONE can - trust me on that one! LOL I LOVE my car and while I always have to watch the bank account, I do not neglect my car in any way - if it needs servicing, I will rob banks and little old ladies to make sure the money is there... again, it's all about passion!
Notice........the wife was the complainer.........and the GIRLFRIEND was picking cars for the garage and happy!
