I am no technical so very puzzled when reading through the exhaust system vocabularies so would appreciate if someone can elaborate the meanings and differences among the followings: manifold, exhaust, muffler, test pipes, silencer.

Manifold = headers = the tubes that extend from the exhaust ports. They come together in a collector. In a post 1980s car there is usually a catalytic converter next (or there may be a "B" pipe before the cat). Catalytic converter is there to clean up emissions. Then follows the muffler (US term) = silencer (Brit term) to slow the exhaust gases and quieten the beast down.

Test pipes are a straight pipe that takes the place of the catalytic converter. This is done (usually) to increase performance.

    My 2 cents:

muffler = silencer = a passive (acoustic) device at or near the end of the exhaust flow path.

manifold = a passive component with more flow inlets than flow outlets. Where this gets confusing is that, in the US, a thick-walled cast iron manifold is always called a "manifold"; whereas, a manifold made from thin-walled tubing is called a "header" or "tubular header". IME, in the F documentation, a manifold made from thin-walled tubing is called a "manifold".

test pipe = a passive component meant to replace an active component (i.e., a cat or a pre-cat). Usually just a short, straight section of tubing with flanges, but not always.

Am I correct to say that Manifold=header (the multi-pipes extended out from the engine, 8 in V8 and 12 in V12).
Silencer=muffler the oval/round box-typed to quiet down the noise.
    Exhaust is the tail bit.
Testpipe is the opposite alternative of cat. converter.

    to make this simple

manifold. = fits to the engine

cats. testpipes. = fits between the manifold and exhaust

exhaust. muffler. auspuff. silencer. = is the big box with the tail pipes on
