What's a wanker?

Ahhh, thanks for setting me straight with the Websters Pudictionary...or should it be Websters Wankictionary.
I never saw the term "wanker" until a couple of years ago, online, maybe on Fchat; and had only a vague idea of what it meant until this enlightening thread appeared tonight and David so eloquently explained it. "Pud", and expressions containing that term -- ancient, if not prehistoric.
I think bugger is a bit wrong there, but yeah, essentially the closest thing that you have in America to a "wanker" is a "jerk-off". I'm almost fluent in American, me Jamie
